Seven days before San Diego Comic-Con 2026 officially opens its doors, downtown San Diego is no longer simply preparing for the world's biggest celebration of pop culture—it is actively transforming into it. A walk through the Gaslamp Quarter on July 15 reveals an environment that changes almost by the hour, with installation crews working under California's blazing summer sun while enormous promotional murals gradually reshape entire city blocks. This annual transformation has become one of Comic-Con's most fascinating traditions, turning ordinary hotels, restaurants and office buildings into massive advertising canvases that celebrate the television series, films, comics, collectibles and games expected to dominate fan conversations throughout the convention. The remarkable aspect of this stage is that visitors are witnessing history in progress rather than a finished spectacle. Cherry pickers remain parked in front of buildings, protective barriers surround installation crews, and several graphics are still incomplete, offering photographers the rare opportunity to document not only the finished artwork but also the craftsmanship behind one of the entertainment industry's largest temporary urban makeovers.

Among the most striking new arrivals is the enormous ABC and Hulu promotional wrap for The Rookie, now fully covering one of the large exterior walls near the San Diego Convention Center. Dominated by Nathan Fillion and surrounded by the ensemble cast, the installation immediately commands attention thanks to its warm golden palette that contrasts with the blue skies above San Diego. The series has maintained a strong Comic-Con presence over recent years, and its prominent location this year underlines its continuing popularity. Only a short distance away, workers were still completing another major ABC/Hulu installation for Abbott Elementary. Rather than revealing the complete artwork immediately, installers were carefully positioning oversized character graphics piece by piece, allowing passersby to observe how these monumental murals are assembled. This behind-the-scenes glimpse is something only visitors arriving several days before Comic-Con can experience, long before the crowds make these locations nearly inaccessible.

Another major visual highlight belongs to AMC+, whose ambitious campaign stretches across several buildings throughout the Gaslamp. The towering Revival mural has become one of the neighborhood's darkest and most atmospheric new additions, while nearby, Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat dominates the façade of the Pendry Hotel with vibrant neon-inspired artwork featuring multiple principal characters layered together in a collage style. Additional window graphics extend the campaign at street level, ensuring the series remains visible from virtually every angle. These installations are particularly significant because AMC Global Media has confirmed that The Vampire Lestat will receive its first-ever Hall H panel during Comic-Con 2026, accompanied by highlights from the musical performance "One Night Only Live," further elevating the franchise's profile during this year's convention.

Just a few blocks away, another highly visible activation continues to expand around the city. Funko has once again transformed the exterior of The New Children's Museum into an enormous Pop! universe celebrating Disney and Pixar's Toy Story. Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Rex appear as giant Pop! figures climbing across the building's walls, while another side features an oversized Hulk seemingly bursting from the structure with Spider-Man peeking through shattered windows above. Installation crews were still making finishing adjustments, reinforcing the feeling that San Diego itself remains a giant worksite dedicated entirely to pop culture. Funko has become synonymous with Comic-Con exclusives, and although its booth remains inside the Convention Center, these outdoor displays have evolved into unofficial landmarks that fans photograph almost as frequently as the convention itself.

Streaming platforms are also making their presence impossible to ignore. Paramount+ has officially branded the familiar Happy Does location as The Lodge, replacing its usual appearance with bold blue graphics that are already attracting curious pedestrians despite remaining closed to the public during setup. Historically, Paramount's offsite experiences have ranked among the convention's most popular attractions, and while the interior remains hidden for now, the exterior branding alone signals another major activation waiting to open. Nearby, promotional artwork for Magic: The Gathering – Marvel Superheroes reminds visitors that tabletop gaming continues to enjoy a growing presence during Comic-Con, with crossover collaborations increasingly sharing the spotlight alongside films and television.

Smaller discoveries throughout the Gaslamp are equally rewarding for attentive fans. A playful promotional banner advertising the unofficial "UNOV" Pokémon-themed speakeasy hints at one of the many fan-organized experiences that traditionally flourish around Comic-Con, while an ordinary public trash can has once again been transformed into R2-D2, demonstrating how even the smallest corners of downtown embrace the convention's spirit. These details often become favorite photographs because they represent the creativity of local businesses eager to participate in Comic-Con week rather than simply observe it. Unlike the massive studio-funded murals, these modest tributes reflect the organic relationship that has developed between San Diego and Comic-Con over more than five decades.

One of the defining characteristics of this year's preparations is the diversity of intellectual properties represented before the convention has even begun. Television series, collectible toys, tabletop games, anime-inspired experiences and premium streaming platforms all compete for visual dominance within only a few city blocks. Rather than focusing exclusively on blockbuster superhero films, the 2026 landscape demonstrates how Comic-Con has evolved into a broader celebration of entertainment culture. The promotional balance between legacy franchises and newer productions suggests that studios increasingly recognize the importance of reaching highly engaged fan communities regardless of genre. The result is an urban landscape where every street corner offers a different story, encouraging repeated walks through the Gaslamp because something new appears almost every day.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of spending Day -7 in downtown San Diego is not any individual mural but the atmosphere itself. Unlike the organized excitement that will soon arrive with more than 130,000 badge holders, the city currently belongs to installers, photographers, journalists and a handful of early visitors. Conversations revolve around lifts, vinyl panels and construction schedules rather than celebrity sightings or exclusive collectibles. Every completed section of artwork signals visible progress, while unfinished walls leave room for speculation about what tomorrow will reveal. By next week, many of these work vehicles will have disappeared beneath crowds of fans, making today's photographs valuable records of Comic-Con before the spectacle officially begins.
