SDCC2026: BAD IDEA Goes Weapons Hot with Warbird as Derek Kolstad, Robert Venditti and Tomás Giorello Lead the Publisher's Biggest San Diego Comic-Con Panel Yet

Monday 13 July, 10:17 AM PT

BAD IDEA is preparing one of its most ambitious San Diego Comic-Con presentations to date, transforming its annual convention appearance into the launchpad for what the publisher is positioning as one of the flagship comic-book events of summer 2026. Scheduled for Friday, July 24, the publisher's major panel will spotlight Derek Kolstad, the creator and writer behind the original John Wick films, alongside acclaimed comics writer Robert Venditti and celebrated artist Tomás Giorello, while also unveiling new projects from the publisher's rapidly expanding publishing line. The centerpiece of the presentation is undoubtedly Warbird, a globe-spanning espionage thriller that brings together an impressive roster of comic-book talent, but BAD IDEA is also promising exclusive reveals, never-before-seen artwork and collectible giveaways designed to make the event one of the convention's must-attend comic panels.

The announcement marks another major milestone in Derek Kolstad's growing relationship with BAD IDEA. After making his comic-book writing debut with Planet Death, the Hollywood screenwriter continues to expand his creative footprint in comics by co-writing Warbird alongside veteran storyteller Robert Venditti, whose résumé includes acclaimed work on Green Lantern, X-O Manowar and Superman '78. Rather than adapting an existing property, the duo is developing an entirely original spy thriller that blends military technology, globe-trotting action and high-stakes espionage. The premise centers on Cole, an elite repossession specialist capable of stealing virtually any vehicle on Earth, who is hired for the impossible mission of stealing one of only three ultra-advanced military aircraft assembled from stolen aerospace technology originating from the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and China. Instead of merely recovering valuable equipment, Cole must destroy two remaining prototypes, placing him squarely at the center of an international geopolitical conflict where failure is measured not in financial loss but in survival itself.

Visually, Warbird assembles an extraordinary creative lineup rarely seen on a single project. Interior artwork is produced by Eisner Award-winning artist Alex Maleev, renowned for redefining the visual identity of Daredevil alongside Brian Michael Bendis, while legendary illustrator Esad Ribić contributes artwork-in-progress and provides the dramatic painted aesthetic for portions of the project. Colors come from Dean White, whose painterly approach has become synonymous with premium comic storytelling, while iconic artist Frank Quitely provides character designs and headline covers. Additional cover artists include Michael Cho, J.G. Jones and others, giving collectors multiple variants from some of the industry's most respected illustrators. This all-star creative roster reflects BAD IDEA's continuing strategy of building prestige-format comics around creators whose names alone attract dedicated readers and collectors.

The San Diego Comic-Con panel itself promises to extend well beyond Warbird. Joining Derek Kolstad, Robert Venditti and Tomás Giorello on stage will be BAD IDEA executives Dinesh Shamdasani, Peter Stern, Benjamin Simpson and Siena Fallon, who will preview what the publisher describes as its biggest publishing slate yet. Fans can expect first looks at upcoming titles including Lancer, It Demands Sacrifice, The Detective and additional surprises, accompanied by new artwork and appearances from special guests. This broader presentation illustrates how BAD IDEA continues to position itself less as a traditional publisher and more as a curator of premium creator-driven comic events, with convention panels functioning as theatrical showcases rather than simple publishing announcements. The publisher has built a reputation for unconventional marketing campaigns, surprise releases and exclusive convention experiences, making each Comic-Con appearance an anticipated event among collectors.

Collectors, naturally, have another compelling reason to attend. Every attendee at the Friday panel will receive a special edition of Warbird #0, signed by both Derek Kolstad and Robert Venditti. Rather than serving merely as promotional material, the zero issue acts as an exclusive prelude to the series ahead of the release of Warbird #1, which is scheduled to arrive in comic shops on August 26 with a cover price of $5.99. BAD IDEA has also teased a second convention-exclusive giveaway comic, the details of which will be revealed closer to the convention. Eligibility for part of the promotional campaign is tied to following the publisher's much-publicized ENIAC campaign by Matt Kindt and Doug Braithwaite, continuing BAD IDEA's long-running tradition of rewarding its most engaged readership through interconnected promotional initiatives rather than conventional convention merchandise.

The festivities do not end with the panel. BAD IDEA is once again organizing what has become one of Comic-Con's more talked-about after-hours gatherings: the invite-only BAD IDEA Tiki Party at Bali Hai on Shelter Island. Taking place on Saturday, July 25, the evening combines creators, publishers, retailers and invited fans for networking, conversation and celebration in an intentionally intimate environment that contrasts sharply with the packed halls of the San Diego Convention Center. Attendance requires advance RSVP and presentation of a BAD IDEA First Customer Pin, reinforcing the publisher's emphasis on cultivating an exclusive community around its books. While many publishers host convention receptions, BAD IDEA has consistently leaned into experiential marketing, turning social events into extensions of its publishing identity and strengthening its reputation among dedicated comic collectors.

With Warbird, BAD IDEA appears determined to demonstrate that blockbuster action storytelling can move seamlessly between Hollywood and comics without sacrificing the strengths of either medium. Derek Kolstad's cinematic instincts, Robert Venditti's experience crafting expansive genre narratives and Alex Maleev's grounded visual storytelling create a combination capable of appealing simultaneously to comic readers, action-film enthusiasts and collectors. Combined with an exceptional artistic lineup featuring Frank Quitely, Esad Ribić, Dean White, Michael Cho and J.G. Jones, the publisher is assembling one of the strongest creator rosters showcased during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. If the panel delivers on its promises of exclusive reveals, premium giveaways and significant announcements, BAD IDEA may once again prove that some of Comic-Con's biggest moments still happen inside the comics industry itself.
