Stern Pinball is preparing to bring one of the biggest attractions for arcade and Transformers fans to San Diego Comic-Con 2026 with the debut of Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye at its annual Pop-Up Arcade located at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, just outside the convention center. Running alongside the company's newly released Pokémon pinball machine, the upcoming showcase will give attendees the opportunity to enjoy 30-minute hands-on sessions with both games while meeting members of the Stern Pinball team. Conveniently located outside the crowded exhibit halls, the Pop-Up Arcade has become a recurring destination during Comic-Con, allowing visitors easier access to Stern's latest creations. This year's presentation is particularly significant as Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye arrives during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, making the event one of the franchise's most anticipated gaming showcases of the summer.

Unlike the original Stern Transformers machine released in 2011, Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye deliberately shifts its focus toward the beloved Generation 1 animated universe rather than Michael Bay's live-action films. Every aspect of the cabinet artwork, display animations and gameplay draws inspiration from the original 1984 television series, immediately recognizable through the vibrant comic-book-inspired illustrations decorating the Pro, Premium and Limited Edition cabinets. The decision resonates particularly well with longtime collectors, as iconic Autobots and Decepticons appear exactly as many fans remember them from Saturday morning cartoons. The playfield itself becomes a visual celebration of the franchise, with colorful representations of Optimus Prime, Megatron, Soundwave, Grimlock, the Dinobots, Constructicons, Protectobots, Aerialbots and Combaticons spread throughout a densely illustrated battlefield. Looking closely at the playfield reveals numerous small nods to Transformers history, from Tech Spec references to faction insignias integrated into ramps, plastics and targets, rewarding observant players beyond the game's primary objectives.

Mechanically, Stern has clearly attempted to make the machine live up to its subtitle, "More Than Meets the Eye." The Premium and Limited Edition versions immediately stand apart thanks to one of the most eye-catching toys Stern has produced in recent years: a fully animatronic Megatron standing over the upper playfield. Rather than serving as a static decorative sculpture, Megatron's articulated fusion cannon rotates toward the player before firing captured pinballs directly back into the game, creating an unpredictable multiball sequence that combines spectacle with genuine gameplay consequences. Facing him on the opposite side is a sculpted Optimus Prime bash toy, giving players the impression that the legendary rivalry is physically unfolding inside the cabinet. Equally inventive is Soundwave, whose cassette deck functions as a physical ball lock before launching balls back into play, cleverly referencing one of the character's defining features from the animated series. These mechanical toys, combined with flowing wireforms, carefully positioned ramps and numerous kinetic shots, make the game feel constantly alive rather than relying solely on LCD animations for excitement.

The game's rules embrace virtually every corner of the classic Transformers mythology. Players collect Energon Cubes to power their progress, assemble the Dinobots, rescue Autobots, gather Transformers Tech Spec cards, complete faction-based objectives and prepare for the climactic confrontation against Megatron. Several missions recreate story arcs inspired directly by the original animated television series, with authentic video sequences displayed on Stern's LCD screen to reinforce the narrative. One particularly enjoyable aspect is the emphasis placed on combination teams, with an illuminated "Ultimate Doom" feature wheel highlighting famous combiners such as Devastator, Bruticus, Defensor, Superion and Menasor, giving players multiple strategic paths instead of a single linear progression. The integration of these characters is more than cosmetic, as each contributes to the evolving objectives and scoring opportunities that encourage repeated plays to uncover the machine's deeper layers.

Audio has always played a significant role in Stern's most successful licensed machines, and Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye is no exception. To commemorate the fortieth anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, Stern secured the inclusion of Stan Bush's legendary anthem "The Touch," a song inseparable from one of the franchise's most memorable cinematic moments. Even more importantly for longtime fans, the machine features newly recorded dialogue by Peter Cullen, once again voicing Optimus Prime, and Frank Welker, returning as both Megatron and Soundwave. Their participation instantly elevates the authenticity of the experience, while original music from Knights of Unicron complements the classic material without overwhelming it. Together, these elements ensure that every mission feels grounded within the universe fans have cherished for over four decades rather than simply borrowing recognizable names and artwork.

Beneath the nostalgic exterior lies some of Stern's newest software technology. Running on the company's Spike 3 platform and fully integrated with Insider Connected, the machine introduces the new Cyber Coin wallet system, allowing players to accumulate digital currency that unlocks exclusive challenge modes across connected games. Among the most interesting additions is "Prime Training," an interactive tutorial mode in which the Autobots effectively teach pinball fundamentals through gameplay, making the machine more welcoming for newcomers without reducing its depth for experienced competitors. Stern also debuts an innovative head-to-head competitive mode that allows two players to compete simultaneously in real time, expanding the social dimension of competitive pinball and demonstrating that modern machines can still experiment with entirely new ways to play.

Collectors, meanwhile, will naturally gravitate toward the Limited Edition model, restricted to just 750 units worldwide. Beyond its exclusive cabinet artwork, the LE includes Stern's updated Expression Lighting System and Speaker Expression Lighting System synchronized with Transformers-themed effects, a mirrored backglass, anti-reflective playfield glass, upgraded sound system, shaker motor, custom armor, designer-signed bottom arch, sequentially numbered plaque, certificate of authenticity and a unique Insider Connected digital owner badge. While the Pro model remains the most accessible version with a suggested retail price starting at $6,999, the Premium introduces the major mechanical enhancements such as the animated Megatron, making it the version likely to attract most location operators and enthusiasts seeking the full gameplay experience.

During the official announcement, Seth Davis, President and CEO of Stern Pinball, explained that the company wanted to create a machine worthy of one of popular culture's defining battles between good and evil. That ambition is evident not only in the visual presentation but also in the mechanical engineering and software systems working together beneath the glass. After spending time around the machine during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, it became apparent that visitors were repeatedly drawn back not simply because of the Transformers license, but because every new game revealed additional objectives, animations and interactions. The crowd frequently gathered around the Premium model whenever Megatron came to life, with the rotating fusion cannon producing the kind of spontaneous reactions that great pinball toys have generated since the industry's golden age. In many respects, that immediate spectator appeal may prove just as important as the extensive rule set, reminding everyone that modern pinball still thrives when mechanical surprises share equal billing with digital technology.
