Deauville 2026 : The Weight and Ethan Hawke Honored
Deauville 2026 : The Weight Opens the Festival as Ethan Hawke Receives Tribute
Friday 4 September, 2:30 PM PT Deauville, Centre International de Deauville (C.I.D.) 2026-09-04
The 52nd Deauville American Film Festival opened on September 4 with a celebration of Ethan Hawke and the French premiere of The Weight, presented locally as Les Contrebandiers. Juliette Binoche handed the actor, screenwriter and director his Deauville Talent Award, honoring a career spanning more than four decades and his enduring association with American independent cinema. The evening then turned from a career tribute to a new film, with Padraic McKinley’s Depression-era survival thriller taking the opening-night slot.
Mulderville’s account of the ceremony identifies Ethan Hawke, producer Ryan Hawke, actors Austin Amelio and Julia Jones, and director Padraic McKinley among those introducing the film. The festival’s published screening schedule independently lists Padraic McKinley and Julia Jones for the September 4 presentation at the C.I.D., programmed at 7 p.m. in Dolby Atmos.

A father’s fight for freedom in Depression-era Oregon
Set in Oregon in 1933, The Weight follows Samuel Murphy, played by Ethan Hawke, after the death of his wife and his separation from his daughter. Imprisoned in a harsh labor camp, he is offered a dangerous route back to freedom: carry smuggled gold through the wilderness. Russell Crowe plays the prison authority behind the bargain, while the expedition exposes its participants to both natural hazards and betrayal. The promise of returning to his child gives the mission an immediate emotional purpose.
The premise links two different measures of value: the gold motivating the operation and the family bond motivating its central character. Read in that light, the title suggests both a physical burden and a father’s responsibility. The story asks how much danger someone can accept when reunion with a child appears to depend on it.

Padraic McKinley brings an editor’s experience to his debut
Although The Weight marks Padraic McKinley’s feature directing debut, he arrived with substantial experience in editing and television. The production company’s biography records work on more than 16 features and over 200 television episodes, followed by directing assignments on Kingdom. His background also includes executive producing The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe.
In an interview with Filmmaker, Padraic McKinley explained that Ethan Hawke suggested bringing Shelby Gaines into the script’s redevelopment. Their reference points included Cool Hand Luke and Jeremiah Johnson, with a preference for a quieter central character and action rooted in the story.

How Germany became the film’s American wilderness
The same interview offers a practical explanation for the film’s geography. Vancouver Island was considered, but financing led the production toward Germany. Padraic McKinley recalled receiving location photographs that resembled the landscapes he had already imagined. Shooting included Munich, studio work and Lower Bavarian locations. The team avoided visible paths to suggest untouched terrain; some setups required a van journey and a hike. The cast also faced icy river water on consecutive shooting days.
There was a lighter side to that physical commitment. According to Padraic McKinley, performers initially requested heavier packs to make the gold-carrying feel convincing, then quickly reconsidered after a few takes. He also recalled a five-hour Zoom conversation with Julia Jones about her character, after which he stopped considering other actresses for the role.

The Weight cast and creative team
Alongside Ethan Hawke, Russell Crowe, Julia Jones and Austin Amelio, the production company confirms Avi Nash, Sam Hazeldine and George Burgess in the cast. Its published credits name Matthew Booi, Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines for the script; Matteo Cocco for cinematography; Padraic McKinley and Matthew Woolley for editing; and Shelby Gaines and Latham Gaines for music. Producers are Simon Fields, Nathan Fields, Ryan Hawke, Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo, with Fields Entertainment, Under the Influence and augenschein Filmproduktion producing, alongside co-producer Construction Filmproduktion.
From the festival circuit to theatrical release
Before Deauville, The Weight had already screened at Sundance and Berlin; the production company identifies those appearances as its world and European premieres respectively. Deauville’s opening-night report confirms that its September 4 screening was the French premiere. The festival lists SND as the French distributor and a running time of 115 minutes, matching the production company’s listing. The film subsequently opened in selected U.S. theaters on September 18 through Vertical.

A lasting place on Deauville’s Planches
The tribute continued on September 5, when Ethan Hawke inaugurated the beach cabin bearing his name on the Planches. The festival described the occasion as a return 35 years after his first visit. Its retrospective selection also included Gattaca, Before Midnight and Training Day, placing the new thriller alongside earlier milestones.
