When walking around the PlayStation demo area, I happen to pass by a game were the rep was giving background to a man about the game. Even before PlayStation let people play the game Concrete Genie. They gave a brief overview on how the game was created and why. The main story plot being about a kid named Ash who is bullied in the abandoned inner city. Right after a environmentally disaster in a fishing city. He finds a magical paint brush that he uses to bring his gene’s and the city back to life. This new game Concrete Genie from Pixelopus is a beautifully well made and unique game. Using a new 2d traditional animation technique tool they developed and patented. Only in 3 years into making this 3rd person action game the game is very impressive.
As I sat down next to another man and played the game. It definitely was a more richer experience. Even though me and the man went threw the same game. The way the game reacted to each of us was different. It was really interesting to see how when we made our genies with the paint brushes. How they came out way different and in that some animated interactive animations were different as well. With over 50 brushes to play with and collect threw the game. The cool thing is that there is no game that will look alike since this game gives you a blank canvas and the tools to make what ever you want. The game is model after Ashes feeling going threw the city, trying to make is better again.
This game is defiantly gonna be a fan favorite. Made up really of two different style of art that fans can enjoy. The drawings you make are more of 2d traditional animation. While the game is made up 3d graphics. Which is like two games smashed into one. But very well done. This game reminds me of one of my favorites games Okami. I think that even though there is only one environment. The way the game was made is amazing. The inner city has great textures and architecture modeling. The way the game reacts differently to every person is great. The idea and message behind the game is amazing and positive which is rare. This game is one to watch out for.
