Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Revealed at D23 2026

Marvel Studios closes D23 with an Avengers-sized reveal
Marvel Studios gave D23 2026 one of its defining moments when Kevin Feige welcomed Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell to the Honda Center stage during the Disney Entertainment Showcase. The trio introduced a public “special look” at Avengers: Doomsday, accompanied by a fresh poster and general ticket sales. Their reunion immediately carried the weight of Avengers: Endgame: Robert Downey Jr. is no longer returning as Tony Stark, but as Victor von Doom, while Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are back as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. The contrast turns a nostalgic homecoming into something deliberately unsettling.
The banter acknowledged that history. Hayley Atwell observed that the D23 audience loves a happy ending, before Chris Evans recalled how close Steve Rogers came to one at the end of Endgame. His punch line — that they “should’ve known better” — neatly reframed the famous final dance as unfinished business rather than a sealed farewell. In an especially revealing anecdote shared with Entertainment Weekly, Chris Evans said he had heard many possible comeback pitches over the years without finding the right one. Learning that Robert Downey Jr. was speaking with Marvel helped make this return finally feel right.

Doctor Doom’s tragedy becomes the trailer’s emotional engine
The footage opens not with an enormous battle, but with Victor von Doom alone on a throne in an imposing, empty chamber. Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, describes him as once brilliant, kind and caring, then broken after everything he loved was taken away. She appears to address a bruised group including Erik Lehnsherr, Remy LeBeau and Steve Rogers, establishing that the film’s multiversal collision has already inflicted damage before the trailer’s largest images arrive.
After a view of a ruined city, Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, confronts Victor von Doom and repeatedly asks whether he caused the devastation. Doom does not offer a conventional confession. Instead, he accuses the assembled heroes of living “stolen lives” that must be returned. That wording is the trailer’s most intriguing clue: the conflict may not simply concern conquest, but who has the right to keep a family, a history or even an entire reality when universes overlap. Marvel’s verified synopsis remains intentionally broad, stating only that beloved heroes from three distinct universes are placed on a deadly collision course against an unprecedented existential threat.
The imagery repeatedly connects that threat to family. Scott Lang appears with Cassie Lang; Johnny Storm holds his young nephew Franklin Richards; Thor is seen with his adopted daughter Love; and Steve Rogers carries a child, deepening the mystery surrounding his life after Endgame. These shots do not prove the precise source of Doom’s anger, but their placement beside his accusation makes legacy, parenthood and lives preserved through altered timelines central visual motifs. It is a more intimate hook than another anonymous end-of-the-world spectacle.

Stormbreaker, Sentinels and three universes on a collision course
The preview’s major display of power comes when Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, attacks Doctor Doom with Stormbreaker. Doom stops the weapon with one finger, hurls the Asgardian aside and declares that hell answers to him before an army of Sentinels awakens. The sequence instantly connects his threat to the mutant world and gives the returning X-Men more than ceremonial cameo status. Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr and Scott Summers also appear in the montage, played respectively by Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden.
Elsewhere, the special look flashes across Shuri, Loki, the Fantastic Four and several generations of Avengers. That breadth reflects the film’s officially announced ensemble, which also includes Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Channing Tatum, Tom Hiddleston, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn. The point is not merely the number of familiar faces. Marvel is deliberately uniting performers and characters formed in separate cinematic histories, making the franchise’s complicated screen legacy part of the drama itself.

Robert Downey Jr. turns an MCU homecoming inside out
Casting the actor who defined the MCU’s first era as its next supreme antagonist remains the film’s boldest creative gamble. Robert Downey Jr. has described Tony Stark and Victor von Doom as scientific geniuses whose trauma sends them in opposite moral directions: one became a hero, while the other demands the combined strength of these worlds to stop him. The trailer’s closing declaration, “for I am Doom,” inevitably echoes the cadence of Tony Stark saying “I am Iron Man,” but Marvel has not confirmed that the two characters are variants of one another. Treating the resemblance as thematic rather than literal keeps the mystery intact.
The film is directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who previously steered Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and is produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz. Its challenge goes beyond assembling a huge cast: it must make three colliding universes emotionally coherent while giving Doctor Doom enough depth to follow Thanos as an Avengers-level threat. The footage suggests the filmmakers are grounding that scale in loss, family and resentment rather than spectacle alone.

Avengers: Doomsday release date and the road to Secret Wars
Avengers: Doomsday opens in the United States on December 18, 2026, with its French release scheduled for December 16, 2026. The story will continue into Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027. By releasing the D23 special look publicly rather than confining it to the room, Marvel allowed the wider audience to see the clearest portrait yet of its new villain — and to understand why the return of beloved heroes may come at a painful cost.
