D23 2026: VisionQuest Unveils Vision's Fractured Mind

Marvel Television made VisionQuest one of D23 2026's major reveals, releasing the first public trailer and reuniting Paul Bettany's Vision with James Spader's Ultron. Premiering October 14, 2026, on Disney+, the eight-episode series concludes the trilogy formed by WandaVision, Agatha All Along and VisionQuest.

VisionQuest Takes Center Stage at D23 2026

During Disney's entertainment showcase at the Honda Center, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige welcomed Paul Bettany and James Spader to present the trailer and poster. More than eleven years after Avengers: Age of Ultron, the footage restores Ultron to the MCU while continuing the unresolved story of White Vision, last seen leaving Westview in the WandaVision finale.

Vision possesses the memories unlocked by his former self, but information has not restored the same personality or emotional bonds. He remembers being an Avenger, a partner and a father, yet doubts that those identities truly belong to him. The trailer therefore treats resurrection as the beginning of an existential problem rather than its solution.

Inside Vision's Artificial Mind

The series visualizes Vision's consciousness as an immense mansion populated by human manifestations of artificial intelligences connected to his creation. Paul Bettany has explained that Vision saved, copied and preserved these programs inside himself. The building becomes both a memory palace and a digital archive whose residents may help, deceive or threaten their host.

The ensemble includes James D'Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E and Jonathan Sayer as U. T'Nia Miller plays Jocasta. Together, they embody the technological genealogy leading from Tony Stark's assistants and Ultron to Vision himself.
The casting of James D'Arcy offers a particularly clever MCU connection. He previously played Edwin Jarvis, the human butler who inspired J.A.R.V.I.S., in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame. The actor now gives a face to the AI originally voiced by Paul Bettany, who subsequently became Vision.

Ultron Returns in Human and Mechanical Forms

The trailer presents James Spader as a human manifestation of Ultron, with hair and beard, while also retaining the villain's robotic form. Within the mansion's logic, that human appearance may represent software rather than a biological body. Marvel has not yet explained whether Ultron exists only inside Vision, survives as a backup or also operates in the outside world.

Ultron is more than a returning antagonist: he is one of Vision's creators. Paul Bettany has jokingly described their conflict as robot daddy issues, but the idea supports the series' deeper examination of abusive fathers, resistant sons and inherited trauma. Vision may require Ultron's knowledge while keeping him behind a formidable firewall, making any cooperation inherently dangerous.

Thomas Shepherd Brings Fatherhood Into the Story

Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, connected to Tommy Maximoff and the speedster Speed. His arrival turns Vision's identity quest into a family story: while confronting the father who helped create him, Vision must consider whether he can become a father to a son returned in another form.

Marvel Television executive Brad Winderbaum has described VisionQuest as a drama spanning three generations - grandfather, father and son - and asking whether someone with an abusive father can become a good father. The structure connects Ultron, Vision and Thomas through emotional as well as technological inheritance.

The casting also follows Agatha All Along, where Billy Maximoff began searching for Tommy. Marvel has not announced Joe Locke for VisionQuest, so Billy's appearance remains unconfirmed. Elizabeth Olsen has likewise not been announced, and the D23 material does not verify Wanda Maximoff's return.

The Final Chapter of the WandaVision Trilogy

Disney officially identifies VisionQuest as the conclusion of the television trilogy begun by WandaVision in 2021 and continued by Agatha All Along in 2024. The new chapter retains their interest in grief, identity and constructed realities, but translates those themes into science fiction, artificial intelligence and the architecture of Vision's mind.

Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard's third season, redeveloped the project after its earlier incarnation under Jac Schaeffer. Brad Winderbaum has called it a love letter to her work while remaining distinctively Terry Matalas's. The directors are Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali and Terry Matalas.

The wider cast includes Todd Stashwick as Paladin and Faran Tahir returning as Raza from 2008's Iron Man.

What the D23 Material Does Not Confirm

A fiery figure in D23 promotional imagery prompted theories that VisionQuest might introduce Jim Hammond, Marvel's original Human Torch. The idea fits a story about synthetic heroes, but Marvel's official announcement did not identify the character. It remains fan speculation, not a confirmed reveal.

Ultron's precise status and appearances by Elizabeth Olsen or Joe Locke remain unconfirmed. Verified facts include Ultron's two forms, the AI-filled mansion and Thomas Shepherd's central role.

Why VisionQuest Could Stand Apart

The trailer's strongest idea is that memory alone cannot create identity. Vision contains a history without feeling that he owns it, while sheltering programs that embody conflicting models of artificial life. J.A.R.V.I.S. represents service, Ultron inherited violence, and later Stark systems ever-greater power and surveillance.

Terry Matalas has said the episodes can feel like different kinds of films, echoing WandaVision's formal experimentation without merely repeating its sitcom structure. Vision's mansion can support psychological drama, science-fiction mystery and action while keeping every shift tied to his fragmented consciousness.

VisionQuest premieres exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. At D23, Marvel did more than revive Ultron: it introduced a series asking whether remembering who you were is enough to decide who you will become.
