Mulder's Review

Cameron Diaz is back in the spotlight, and what a pleasure it is to have her back after almost ten years! Her natural charisma, which has lit up so many iconic comedies and action films, shines through once again in this Netflix action comedy. Back in Action, directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), offers a dynamic adventure mixed with humor, emotion and nostalgia, a cocktail that will delight long-time fans and appeal to new viewers.

The plot follows Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx), two former CIA spies who have traded their exciting lives for the tranquility of the suburbs after the birth of their children. From the opening sequence, a spectacular plane crash, the duo's chemistry and efficiency shine through. Although the action relies on certain classic codes, this scene immediately sets the tone: an energetic, entertaining film, where the characters are at the heart of the story.

Fifteen years after retirement, Emily and Matt juggle their roles as parents with their memories of espionage. Their daily lives are marked by situations that are both funny and touching, especially with their children: Alice (McKenna Roberts), a rebellious teenager, and Leo (Rylan Jackson), a little tech genius. These moments of family life, filled with humor and tenderness, are reminiscent of the best family comedies, and reinforce the human aspect of the film.

Where Back in Action excels is in its ability to balance hectic action with family dynamics. The scenes in which Emily and Matt monitor their daughter's teenage antics or engage in hilarious musical numbers with their children are a pure delight. Glenn Close, as the eccentric grandmother, brings irresistible energy, and the intergenerational relationship between Emily and her mother adds depth to the story.

In terms of action, the film is a visual delight. From a car chase in a quiet suburb to a thrilling escape on the Thames, every scene is carefully choreographed to captivate the viewer. Musical choices, such as Ain't That a Kick in the Head to accompany a fight scene, add a touch of style that hits the mark every time.

Cameron Diaz shines in this role, reminding us why she is one of Hollywood's most beloved actresses. Her return is a celebration of her talent, and although the script doesn't always give her the opportunity to shine to the full, she infuses Emily with inimitable energy and warmth. Jamie Foxx, charismatic as ever, forms a memorable duo with her that carries the film from start to finish.

Although the story follows a familiar structure, this contributes to its accessible charm. It's a film that doesn't seek to reinvent the genre, but delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, fast-paced adventure punctuated by moments of heartfelt emotion.

Back in Action is an excellent option for a relaxing evening in front of a good movie. Seeing Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx reunited on screen is pure bliss, and despite a few imperfections, the film manages to capture the essence of quality entertainment. While we await her next project, Cameron Diaz's return is a celebration of her career and a fine tribute to what has always made her a star of the cinema.
