Mulder's Review

Leave the World Behind is a disturbing and thought-provoking cinematic experience that delves into the depths of human behavior in the face of inexplicable crises. Directed by Sam Esmail, best known for his work on Mr. Robot, the film adapts Rumaan Alam's novel into a suspense thriller that deftly balances ambiguity, tension and an exploration of society's vulnerabilities.

The story unfolds as Amanda Sandford (Julia Roberts) surprises her family with a spontaneous vacation, renting a beautiful beach house to escape the complexities of everyday life. The tranquility of the place quickly descends into chaos when a huge oil tanker runs aground, setting the stage for a series of inexplicable events that shatter the family's sense of normalcy.

Sam Esmail manages to keep both characters and audience in the dark, introducing G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) as unexpected guests in search of refuge. The racial undertones subtly woven into their interactions add an extra layer of tension, addressing societal issues without overtly naming them. The film's deliberate decision to avoid explicit explanations contributes to a heightened sense of urgency and fear, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the characters' disorienting reality.

Visually, Sam Esmail employs a distinctive directing style, using long shots, disoriented camera angles and a play on focus to emphasize the abnormality of the events unfolding. Mac Quayle's music enhances the film's atmosphere, creating an eerie, unsettling backdrop that complements the narrative.

Although the film moves towards a minor denouement rather than a grandiose resolution, it manages to maintain a sense of sinister foreboding throughout. The deliberate pacing and focus on character, particularly the interactions between G.H., Amanda, Ruth and Clay (Ethan Hawke), allow the film to explore the complex dynamics that emerge in times of crisis.

The performances in Leave the World Behind are commendable, with Julia Roberts portraying the complex character of Amanda, at once unsympathetic and fiercely protective of her family. Ethan Hawke counters with a more understated performance, while Mahershala Ali exudes class and mystery, forcing viewers to recalibrate their understanding of the truth.

In support, Myha'la infuses Ruth with piquant charisma, and Kevin Bacon's memorable cameo adds depth to the film. Young actors Charlie Evans and Farrah Mackenzie deliver outstanding performances as Archie and Rose, contributing to the overall strength of the ensemble.

Basically, Leave the World Behind invites us to contemplate how people treat each other in times of crisis, echoing Amanda's early remarks about her disdain for people. The film wants viewers to make the connection between characters and episodes, adding layers of morality and questioning authority. However, it also invites viewers to let themselves be carried along by the narrative, absorbing the content without the need for direct resolutions.

While the deliberate ambiguity and slower pace may not appeal to those seeking clear answers, Leave the World Behind stands out as a psychological thriller that stays in the mind. Esmail's cinematic expertise, combined with strong performances, makes for a film that encourages introspection, leaving viewers with haunting questions and a sense of unease that lingers long after the credits roll. Our big favorite this week.
