Higher. Further. Faster. Captain Marvel soars into theaters at warp speed and we don’t expect her to slow down anytime soon. It’s opening weekend for Captain Marvel, otherwise known as Carol Danvers, another origin story to add to the many in the Marvel cinematic universe. This being their first female lead film. This film is many things but boring is not one of them.
We all know Marvel is a master at the craft of superhero films. Origin stories being nothing new to them. If you grew up in the nineties you’re going to love all the nostalgia. The clothing, the music, the painfully slow internet, the Blockbuster. It was a decade to remember so what better than sticking a new fan favorite and some old fan favorites right in the center of it.
One of the best things about superhero movies is that you find yourself inspired. Though the characters may be fictional they turn into many’s true hero’s. Captain Marvel is certainly leaving many feeling empowered and it’s easy to see why. A strong female character finds her way through hard times with a little help from her friends, they come out on top. Not something we see a lot of in theaters but hopefully something we’ll be seeing more of soon. Brie Larson has brought a stunning performance to the table, sure to boost the box office numbers in 2019.
We get a new taste of some characters that are far from new to the MCU, most specifically a fresh faced Nick Fury. It’s a Nick Fury like you’ve never seen him, and we can only hope we get to see this side of him again at some point. Alongside Carol Danvers, it’s a pair you didn’t know you wanted but now wonder how you ever lived without. Carols quick wit is matched and returned from Fury, both learning to trust and work together faster than one might imagine.
The action almost never slows down in this film. From the opening scene down to crashing on earth they keep a steady pace through the two hour movie. The choreographed fight scenes hold up throughout while the cinematography pulls it all together, integrating Carol Danvers past life into flashbacks. It certainly feels like a Marvel movie but also like something completely new.
A small side note, if you’re a cat lover you’re going to love this movie. That’s a promise. As always, stick around for the credits, mid and post credits. Don’t miss the newest addition to the MCU. There’s a new Captain in town, you’re going to want to meet her.
