Crystal Lake: Friday the 13th prequel arrives October 15

More than four decades after Friday the 13th turned a New Jersey summer camp into one of horror cinema’s most recognizable locations, Crystal Lake is going back before the hockey mask. Produced by A24, the eight-episode drama reframes the mythology through Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, and the death of her young son Jason. Peacock has confirmed that all eight hour-long episodes will arrive in the United States on October 15, 2026, giving the franchise a television return built around the tragedy that preceded the 1980 film rather than simply recreating its familiar slasher formula.

The official premise follows Pam, a single mother still consumed by grief almost a year after her sickly young son drowned in the town lake. When two strangers arrive and begin probing her past, disturbing events spread through Crystal Lake and force the community to question who Pam really is. That perspective matters: the original Friday the 13th ultimately revealed Jason’s mother as its killer, while Jason’s later transformation into the franchise’s defining icon came afterward. Crystal Lake therefore has room to treat Pamela not as a final-act revelation, but as the emotional and psychological center of a much longer story.

Linda Cardellini leads a new generation at Crystal Lake

Alongside Linda Cardellini, Callum Vinson appears in the recurring role of young Jason Voorhees. William Catlett plays local police chief Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler is his journalist sister Brianna Brooks, Cameron Scoggins plays police officer Dorf and Gwendolyn Sundstrom portrays Grace. Peacock also lists Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik among the recurring cast. The official trailer, released in September, emphasizes an ominous small-town atmosphere, Pamela’s grief and the uneasy question of what may be stalking the community.

The series is created, written and run by Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as an executive producer after working on It: Welcome to Derry. Directing duties are deliberately divided across the season: Michael Lennox handles episodes 101 through 103, Celine Held and Logan George direct episodes 104 through 106, and Quyen Tran directs episodes 107 and 108. A24 reconnects the series with the original film’s New Jersey roots

Crystal Lake was filmed in New Jersey, and one production choice gives the prequel an unusually tangible link to the movie that started everything. Production returned to Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, the active Scout camp used as the primary camp location for the original Friday the 13th. The property remains private and normally opens to the public only for authorized tour dates, which makes its reuse more than a generic nostalgia cue: the new series is physically revisiting part of the landscape that helped define Crystal Lake on screen.

Principal photography began in June 2025 under the working title Mama’s Boy. Filming also took place around New Jersey, including Jersey City and West Milford, while Rutt’s Hut in Clifton was used for interior and exterior work. The production wrapped in October 2025. By April 2026, Brad Caleb Kane said the final audio mixes for all eight episodes had been completed, marking a strikingly different stage for a project that had spent years changing shape before reaching cameras.

A long road from abandoned TV concepts to A24’s eight-episode series

The idea of extending Friday the 13th through television predates the current production by decades. Earlier concepts explored life around Crystal Lake, and another television project was developed for The CW in the mid-2010s before the network declined to proceed. The present incarnation was announced in 2022 with A24, but it also underwent a major creative reset before Brad Caleb Kane became showrunner in 2024. The finished version now arrives not as a conventional Jason-led sequel, but as a prequel focused on the Voorhees family and the community around them.

That long development history makes the final premise particularly notable. Instead of treating franchise continuity as a checklist, Crystal Lake is using a character who was essential to the original film but later overshadowed by her son. Early reactions to the first two episodes screened at the Toronto International Film Festival have likewise described a more character-driven mystery and drama than a straightforward repetition of the later films’ kill-by-kill structure. That does not remove the horror; it relocates its starting point into grief, family history and a town already learning to fear its own lake.

Crystal Lake begins its festival run before the October streaming launch

The first two episodes received their world-premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, 2026, with Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Cameron Scoggins, Devin Kessler, Brad Caleb Kane and director Michael Lennox among those attending. The series is also scheduled for a special Beyond Fest presentation of episodes one and two at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles on October 2, followed by a Q&A with Brad Caleb Kane. New York Comic Con is promoting a Crystal Lake first-look screening during its October 8 opening day.

For audiences, the distribution picture is now unusually broad. Peacock will release all eight episodes in the United States on October 15. Warner Bros. Discovery has acquired Crystal Lake for HBO Max across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, excluding the United Kingdom and Ireland, with a 2026 launch confirmed for those HBO Max territories. In the UK and Ireland, Sky has separately acquired the series for Sky and NOW. The result is a coordinated international return for one of horror’s most durable properties, but with Pamela Voorhees—not the adult masked Jason—as the figure guiding viewers back into the woods.
