Heart of the Beast: Saype brings Brad Pitt’s survival thriller to the Alps
Heart of the Beast : Saype unveils a monumental Heart of the Beast mural in the Alps

With only days remaining before Heart of the Beast reaches French cinemas on September 23, 2026, the survival thriller directed by David Ayer is taking an unusual route beyond conventional film promotion. Franco-Swiss land artist Guillaume Legros, better known as Saype, has created a monumental 2,000-square-metre ephemeral mural in a high-altitude pasture in the Beaufortain Valley. Inspired by the relationship at the centre of the film, the composition shows a human hand reaching toward a dog’s paw, reducing the story of survival, loyalty and mutual dependence to one immediately readable gesture. The setting is especially fitting: a work made directly in an immense mountain landscape becomes a physical echo of a film in which wilderness is not simply scenery, but an active force testing the limits of its protagonists.
Saype reworks the visual language of Beyond Walls
The image also creates a direct bridge with Saype’s best-known international project, Beyond Walls. Launched on the Champ de Mars in Paris in 2019 with a 15,000-square-metre fresco, the project uses monumental intertwined hands as a symbol of solidarity, mutual aid and human connection. For Heart of the Beast, that familiar visual vocabulary is deliberately altered: the second human hand is replaced by a canine paw. The change is simple but significant, shifting the idea of solidarity beyond human relationships and toward the largely wordless understanding that can develop between a person and an animal. Saype has explained that the connection between humans and living beings has recurred in his work for years, and that James and Odin offered a way to express two beings learning to understand, trust and, ultimately, save one another.

Brad Pitt and Odin face the Alaskan wilderness together
That relationship is the dramatic engine of Heart of the Beast. Brad Pitt plays James Belmont, a former Special Forces officer who survives a devastating plane crash and becomes stranded deep in Alaska with Odin, his retired combat dog. Cut off from civilization, the pair must confront the elements and rely on training, instinct and their bond to stay alive. Paramount describes the film as an intense adventure thriller built around the unbreakable connection between a man and his best friend. Odin is played by a German Shepherd named Uber, and Brad Pitt has described working with his canine co-star as a particularly special experience, even calling the dog the film’s star in a behind-the-scenes featurette.
David Ayer returns to a story of loyalty under extreme pressure
Behind the camera, David Ayer returns to themes that have repeatedly shaped his work: loyalty, endurance, trauma and people forced to depend on one another under extreme pressure. Heart of the Beast also reunites the filmmaker with Brad Pitt after Fury. The screenplay is by Cameron Alexander, while the principal cast also includes J. K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. The film’s cinematography is by Mauro Fiore, editing by Dody Dorn, and music by Jared Michael Fry. Principal photography took place in New Zealand, giving the production access to landscapes capable of standing in for the severe scale and isolation of Alaska. The finished film runs 101 minutes.

An ephemeral artwork designed to disappear back into nature
Saype’s mural gains another layer of meaning from its temporary existence. His large-scale works are created directly on natural surfaces with an eco-responsible, biodegradable paint developed for this practice; his official material describes a mixture based notably on chalk and charcoal. The image is therefore destined to fade with weather and vegetation rather than remain permanently imposed on the site. Seen from ground level, a giant land-art composition can be difficult to grasp as a whole; from above, its separate forms resolve into a single image. That dependence on perspective mirrors Heart of the Beast in an intriguing way: amid an environment vastly larger than either protagonist, the small gesture connecting James and Odin becomes the emotional centre of the story.
From the Eiffel Tower to Giverny, Saype works on a monumental scale
The Alpine project arrives during another active year for Saype. In June 2026, he created Nymphéas in Giverny, an approximately 7,500-square-metre grass painting conceived for the centenary of Claude Monet’s death and inspired by the landscape associated with the Impressionist master. His career had already reached a major international milestone in 2019, when Forbes selected Guillaume Legros for its European 30 Under 30 list in Art & Culture. That same year, Beyond Walls began beneath the Eiffel Tower with an enormous chain of interlocking hands. Subsequent stages carried the concept internationally, reinforcing an artistic practice in which scale attracts attention while impermanence keeps the landscape itself central.

Heart of the Beast heads to San Sebastián before its theatrical rollout
The film’s festival profile will add another stage to its launch. Heart of the Beast has been selected to screen out of competition in the Official Selection of the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival, with Brad Pitt and David Ayer announced by the festival as attending. The official San Sebastián listing confirms Cameron Alexander as screenwriter, Mauro Fiore as cinematographer, Dody Dorn as editor and Jared Michael Fry as composer, alongside a 101-minute running time. Paramount Pictures France will release the film in French cinemas on September 23, while Paramount has scheduled the United States theatrical opening for September 25, 2026.
Cinema, land art and one shared image of trust
As a promotional collaboration, Saype’s Heart of the Beast mural works because it does more than reproduce a poster or place familiar faces in an unexpected location. Instead, it translates the film’s central relationship into the artist’s own language. A hand and a paw nearly meeting in the Alps can suggest protection, vulnerability, companionship and dependence without revealing the film’s plot. The fact that the image will eventually vanish only strengthens the connection with a survival story built around fragile lives in an overwhelming natural environment. For a film about two companions who cannot communicate through ordinary language, an enormous silent image in the mountains is an unusually coherent extension of its premise.
