SDCC 2026 : Dread the Hall H 2026 turns the convention into a delightfully terrifying horror anthology celebrating convention culture
Friday 17 July, 12:01 PM PT
As San Diego Comic-Con once again prepares to welcome hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world, Image Comics and Syzygy Publishing are embracing one of the convention's defining experiences: the unique mixture of excitement, exhaustion, obsession and unpredictability that accompanies every major pop culture gathering. Arriving in comic book stores on July 22, 2026, just ahead of the opening of San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Dread the Hall H 2026 transforms familiar convention rituals into horror stories that affectionately satirize fandom while celebrating everything that makes comic conventions unforgettable. The oversized 48-page one-shot reunites Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated writer Jordan Hart with Chris Ryall, founder of Syzygy Publishing, following the success of the inaugural Dread the Hall H released in 2025. Published through Image Comics, the special continues the publisher's tradition of creator-owned experimentation, blending horror, comedy and convention in a format that feels as much like an exclusive SDCC souvenir as a standalone comic.
Rather than presenting a single narrative, the anthology explores several interconnected nightmares inspired by experiences instantly recognizable to convention veterans. The creative team imagines collectors driven to madness by increasingly rare convention variants, celebrity appearances that become dangerously literal, and the overwhelming frenzy surrounding exclusive merchandise and oversold panels. The stories deliberately exaggerate situations every attendee has experienced—long queues, sleep deprivation, frantic scheduling and fear of missing out—turning them into supernatural or horrific scenarios while never losing sight of the affection that creators themselves have for convention culture. Jordan Hart has described the stories as taking recognizable convention moments and pushing them "to absurd levels of satire and horror," an approach that reflects both the comic's playful spirit and its understanding of why fans willingly endure these annual endurance tests.

The artistic roster reinforces that diversity of tone. Interior stories are illustrated by Luana Vecchio, C.P. Wilson III, Marianna Ignazzi and Tom Williams, each bringing a distinct visual identity to different nightmares unfolding across the convention floor. Cover collectors are equally well served through artwork by Maria Wolf, Luana Vecchio and Jordan Hart, accompanied by a 1:10 sketch photo variant from Tony Fleecs and an elaborate incentive cover by Zach Howard. That final variant serves as an affectionate tribute to legendary DC Comics editor Carmine Infantino, incorporating his famous "Seven Things Guaranteed to Sell a Comic"—gorillas, motorcycles, dinosaurs, cities on fire, purple skies, time rifts and "cryin' and dyin'"—into a single intentionally outrageous composition. It is an inside joke aimed squarely at longtime comic readers while simultaneously functioning as a genuine collector's item during convention season.
One of the anthology's most distinctive qualities lies beyond its stories. Continuing the playful spirit traditionally associated with convention exclusives, the issue includes CONLAND, a board game illustrated by Chris Anderson that parodies Candy Land by replacing colorful fantasy pathways with the exhausting obstacle course familiar to anyone who has attempted to secure exclusive merchandise or gain access to Hall H. Additional faux product comics deliberately imitate the classic Hostess comic advertisements of the 1970s, creating the illusion that readers have stumbled upon forgotten promotional material rescued from an old convention program. These bonus features reinforce the publication's identity as more than a horror anthology; it is effectively a humorous time capsule of convention culture, filled with references that longtime attendees immediately recognize while remaining accessible to newer fans discovering Comic-Con traditions for the first time.

That blend of nostalgia and satire extends naturally into the creators' promotional plans during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 itself. On Saturday, July 25, Chris Ryall and Jordan Hart will host the panel Dread the Hall H 2026: More (Fictional) Comic Convention Horror Stories in Room 23ABC from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PDT. Joining them will be cover artist Maria Wolf and interior artist Chris Anderson, who will discuss both genuine convention experiences and fictional horrors inspired by years spent navigating America's largest pop culture event. Every attendee will receive an exclusive enamel pin while supplies last, further embracing Comic-Con's tradition of limited collectibles that become treasured souvenirs long after the convention concludes. The comic will also be available throughout the show at the Image Comics booth (#1915), allowing attendees to purchase the issue during the very event that inspired its stories.
The concept resonates because it captures something unique about San Diego Comic-Con itself. Hall H has become legendary not simply because of the Hollywood presentations hosted there, but because obtaining access often requires extraordinary commitment, overnight camping, carefully coordinated line groups and remarkable endurance. Those realities have become almost mythical within convention culture, creating shared experiences that attendees recount for years afterward. Instead of treating these rituals as inconveniences, Dread the Hall H 2026 embraces them as modern folklore, exaggerating them into tales of monsters, supernatural transformations and collector obsession while acknowledging that the emotional highs and lows of convention attendance are precisely what keep fans returning every summer. In that sense, the anthology functions simultaneously as horror, satire and a genuine love letter to fandom, echoing the publisher's comparison with acclaimed creator-owned series such as Ice Cream Man and The Department of Truth, which similarly mix unsettling concepts with sharp social commentary.

Founded in 1992 by a collective of superstar artists, Image Comics has long championed creator-owned publishing, becoming one of the largest comic publishers in the United States and home to landmark series including Spawn, The Walking Dead, Invincible, Saga, Monstress and The Department of Truth. Through Syzygy Publishing, operated by Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall, the publisher has increasingly explored original genre projects ranging from Joe Hill's Rain to All Against All, making Dread the Hall H 2026 a natural addition to an imprint known for blending horror, science fiction and experimental storytelling.
