Movies - Tad and the Magic Lamp: Tad, Sara, and Momie Embark on a Race Against History

By Mulder, 18 june 2026

After captivating several generations of young viewers around the world, the animated franchise Tad the Explorer is set to take a new step forward with Tad and the Magic Lamp, scheduled for release in French theaters on August 26, 2026. A true phenomenon in Spanish animated cinema, the saga created by director Enrique Gato continues to thrive more than ten years after its debut. With nearly eight million cumulative viewers in Spain, over 47 million euros in domestic box office revenue, and approximately 120 million dollars generated at the global box office, the adventures of the lovable, clumsy explorer have become one of Spanish animation’s most profitable exports. In France, the previous installment, released in 2022, also marked a major turning point by attracting more than 500,000 viewers, becoming the series’ biggest hit in France and confirming that the character had found an audience well beyond Spain’s borders.

This new adventure also marks a significant evolution in the characters’ lives. Whereas the previous films focused mainly on Tad’s archaeological discoveries and exotic expeditions, this fourth installment chooses to explore a more family-oriented dimension. Now a couple and parents, Tad and Sara see their daily lives turned upside down by the arrival of Olimpia—nicknamed Oli—a two-year-old girl who is as intrepid as she is endearing. This shift in narrative dynamics offers a fresh perspective on the heroes the audience has been following for several years. The creators of the saga seem to have wanted their characters to grow alongside their audience, while retaining the elements that have made the franchise a success: humor accessible to all ages, spectacular adventures, and a cast of instantly recognizable supporting characters.

At the heart of this new plot is a character particularly beloved by fans: Momie. Since his first appearance, this comedic character has become one of the series’ mainstays thanks to his eccentric personality and offbeat humor. This time, his feeling of being sidelined by Tad and Sara’s family happiness sets off an adventure with potentially catastrophic consequences. During a trip to London, the group discovers the legendary Magic Lamp from One Thousand and One Nights. By making an unexpected wish, Momie finds himself transported back in time to relive the era when he was admired by all. This simple personal desire then threatens to alter the course of history, forcing Tad, Sara, and their companions to travel through the ages to undo the damage before it’s too late.

The concept of time travel is likely the franchise’s most ambitious endeavor to date. While previous films focused primarily on lost civilizations or legendary treasures, Tad and the Magic Lamp features a wealth of historical and mythological settings. The heroes will journey from the mysterious city of Païtiti—often associated with South American legends of lost cities—to ancient Greece, before venturing into the fascinating worlds inspired by One Thousand and One Nights. The depiction of Ali Baba’s cave and the Forty Thieves, in particular, promises to immerse viewers in some of the most famous tales of Eastern literature. This approach allows the creative team to play with different cultures, historical periods, and visual styles within a single film, offering a particularly rich playground for animation.

Behind this new production is a team that knows Tad’s world inside and out. The film is directed by Enrique Gato, the franchise’s original creator and a leading figure in contemporary Spanish animation. Production is led by Nicolás Matji, while the screenplay is written by Manuel Burque and Josep Gatell. The music is once again composed by Zacarías M. de la Riva, whose orchestral scores have played a major role in shaping the saga’s sound identity. The project is led by Lightbox Animation Studios, in partnership with Telecinco Cinema, Ikiru Films, Anangu Grup, Tadeo Films AIE, Mediaset España, Movistar Plus+, and Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group, reflecting the franchise’s growing industrial significance over the years.

The original voice cast also brings together several familiar voices from the world of Tad, including Óscar Barberán, Michelle Jenner, Joseph Balderrama, and Trevor White. This artistic continuity is one of the franchise’s major strengths, as it has always sought to maintain consistency across the various episodes while gradually developing its characters. This strategy echoes that of major international animated sagas, where the emotional development of the heroes helps foster long-term audience loyalty.

Beyond its spectacular plot, Tad and the Magic Lamp also seems to aim to lightly explore universal themes such as family, each person’s place within a group, nostalgia for the past, and acceptance of change. Momie’s journey, driven by his need to regain the attention he once received, could thus offer an unexpected emotional depth beneath the humor and action. This ability to blend family adventure with deeper reflections has often been one of the franchise’s understated strengths, explaining why it continues to appeal to both children and their parents alike.

Distributed in France by Paramount Pictures France, Tad and the Magic Lamp is shaping up to be one of the major family events of late summer 2026. With its journey through civilizations, its references to the world’s great legends, its signature humor, and the natural evolution of its iconic characters, this new installment aims to demonstrate that Spanish animated cinema’s most famous explorer still has many treasures left to discover. After exploring the pyramids, lost cities, and the most famous archaeological mysteries, Tad is now set to take on time itself in what promises to be the most spectacular adventure of his entire story.

Synopsis:
Tad and Sara are now the proud parents of Oli, an adorable and intrepid two-year-old girl. The little family’s happiness casts a bit of a shadow over Momie, who feels like she’s taking a back seat. While on vacation in London, the group stumbles upon the Magic Lamp from One Thousand and One Nights, and Momie makes an unexpected wish: to travel back in time to the days of her youth, when everyone adored her.  Tad, Sara, and the whole team then have no choice but to set off in pursuit of Momie through the past, before the entire course of history is altered… This new adventure will take them across the Atlantic Ocean, from the mythical lost city of Paititi to Ancient Greece, before leading them to the heart of the Middle East, all the way to the legendary cave of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. A spectacular journey through time, civilizations, and legends, in Tad’s greatest adventure yet.
