Flow : The Cat Who Conquered Water
Monday 17 June, 7:51 AM PT
Flow, directed by Gints Zilbalodis, is a riveting tale of survival and camaraderie. The film follows a cat who wakes up in a world submerged by water, with all human life seemingly vanished. Finding refuge on a boat filled with animals of different species, the cat must learn to cooperate with his new companions to adapt to their transformed environment. The story explores themes of survival, adaptation, and collaboration as the characters, initially driven by fear and survival instincts, gradually learn to work together and appreciate the beauty in their changed world.

Flow was a significant undertaking, supported financially by the National Film Centre of Latvia, the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia, the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, ARTE France, Eurimages, RTBF, and the Belgian Tax Shelter. Animation for the film was completed in France and Belgium, highlighting a robust international collaboration. In 2022, while still in development, materials from Flow were presented at that year's Cartoon Movie forum in Bordeaux. The film's world premiere took place in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on May 22, 2024. It was also showcased at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it won the Jury Award, the Audience Award, and the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution in the Feature Film category. UFO Distribution is set to release Flow theatrically in France on October 30, 2024.

Gints Zilbalodis, the visionary behind Flow, is no stranger to the animation world. His first feature, Away, won the Contrechamp Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and was selected for over 90 festivals worldwide. Zilbalodis’s fascination with filmmaking began at a young age, leading him to create seven short films before Away. Flow represents his second full-length animated feature. In an interview, Gints Zilbalodis shared his inspiration for Flow and his deep connection to nature and animals from childhood. He expressed his preference for crafting stories in captivating natural environments rather than dystopian or realistic dramas. His films are characterized by their visual storytelling and minimal dialogue, a style that allows audiences to immerse themselves fully in the cinematic experience.

This narrative resonates on multiple levels, portraying animals with simple yet profound motivations that reflect human behavior and societal dynamics. The film’s atmosphere blends reality with dream-like sequences, creating a visually rich and emotionally engaging journey. Gints Zilbalodis’s choice to avoid explicit explanations or dialogue enhances the dream-like quality, inviting viewers to interpret the story through their perspectives.
