Clifford the Big Red Dog is a series of American children's books about a giant red labrador named Clifford. It was first published in 1963 and was written by Norman Bridwell (1928-2014). The series helped to establish Scholastic as a leading publishing company, and Clifford is Scholastic's official mascot.
The book series is finally being adapted for the big screen with Clifford directed by Walt Becker (American Party (Van Wilder) (2002), Wild Hogs (2007), Old Dogs (2009), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015)) and written by Jay Scherick, David Ronn, Annie Mumolo and Stan Chervin. The film is based on Norman Bridwell's series of children's books of the same name. The film stars Darby Camp, Jack Whitehall, Sienna Guillory, Kenan Thompson, Rosie Perez and John Cleese. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Dolby Cinema and IMAX on November 5, 2021 in the United States and December 1, 2021 in France.
In 2016, Paramount Pictures had bought the rights to develop a hybrid animated and live-action film. On September 25, 2017, it was reported that Walt Becker had been hired to make a film based on a script being rewritten by Ellen Rapoport, and the original written by Justin Malen, which would be produced by Forte through its Silvertongue Films banner. In May 2019, Darby Camp and Jack Whitehall signed to star in the film. In June 2019, John Cleese, Sienna Guillory, Izaac Wang, Kenan Thompson, Rosie Perez, David Alan Grier, Keith Ewell, Bear Allen Blaine and Lynn Cohen joined the cast. The main shooting began on June 10, 2019 in New York City and ended on August 23, 2019. On November 18, 2020, it was announced that John Debney would compose the music for the film.
