“ The wars were so long ago nobody even remembers. Darkness and fear ruled until the time of the barons, seven men and women who forged order out of chaos. People flocked to them for protection. That protection became servitude. They banished guns and trained armies of lethal fighters they called Clippers. This world is built on blood. Nobody is innocent here. Welcome to the Badlands.” - M.K. (Aramis Knight)

Into the Badlands,”AMC’s post-apocalyptic, visually stunning drama series, is a story of survival and dominance set in a future feudal society. Within the territory known as the Badlands, a variety of clans struggle for supremacy over one another; these clans have been formed by the destruction of familial bonds and skirmishes over power. The show’s interwoven themes of martial arts, love and redemption are highlighted by what the show is best known for: its stunning cinematography, and striking fight sequences.
Season three of “Into the Badlands” finds Sunny (Daniel Wu of Tomb Raider) living off the grid, doing his best to provide for his infant son, Henry, in the wake of Veil’s death. It is only when Henry contracts a mysterious illness that Sunny must join forces with Bajie (Nick Frost of Shaun of the Dead) and journey back into the Badlands, where The Widow (Emily Beecham of Daphne) and Baron Chau (Eleanor Matsuura of Wonder Woman) are entrenched in a drawn-out war that has destabilized the entire region. No longer supported by Tilda (Ally Ioannides of “Parenthood”) or Waldo (Stephen Lang of Avatar), The Widow must find new allies in Lydia (Orla Brady of “Fringe”) and in Nathaniel Moon (Sherman Augustus of “Westworld”) — the former regent who lost his hand to Sunny and Bajie in Season two. But when a mysterious nomadic leader called Pilgrim (Babou Ceesay of “Guerilla”) arrives in the Badlands on a mission to restore Azra and usher in a new era of “peace," old enemies must band together to defend the Badlands.
The series also stars Aramis Knight (Enders Game) as M.K., Lorraine Toussaint (“Orange is the New Black”) as Cressida, Ella-Rae Smith (The Commuter) as Nix, Lewis Tan (“Iron Fist”) as Gaius and Dean-Charles Chapman (“Game of Thrones”) as Castor.
From AMC Studios, “Into the Badlands” was created by executive producers, showrunners and writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville”) and is executive produced by Oscar®-nominated producers Stacey Sher (Django Unchained) and Michael Shamberg (Contagion), along with David Dobkin (The Judge), Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero), Michael Taylor (“TURN: Washington’s Spies”) and Wu. “Into the Badlands” closed its second season as a top-ten scripted series on ad-supported cable, averaging 3 million viewers per episode.
Synopsis:
The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world approximately 500 years after a war that left civilization in ruins. Many elements of technology, such as electricity and ground vehicles, have survived the apocalypse but society now shuns guns, leading to a reliance on melee weaponry. In a territory known as the Badlands, which is somewhere in the former United States, a feudal society has developed to fill the power vacuum left by the war. Barons control land and monopolies over commodities like opium and fuel, trading amongst themselves to maintain the peace. Each baron is served by a massive workforce of slaves called cogs, as well as a prostitute class called dolls. A Baron maintains power through a corps young men and women called clippers: highly trained and loyal warriors. Clippers are forbidden from marrying and having children lest their loyalties be divided. Each Clipper force is captained by a regent. Several groups exist outside the strict hierarchy of the barons. Nomads are the most common, mostly lawless homicidal bandits who subsist on stealing from trade convoys between the baronies but some live in organized clans. The River King and his men control water trade in the Badlands and beyond and is considered a neutral party in the Barons' power struggles. An ascetic religious movement is also shown to exist on the fringes of society, living in isolated communities and practicing a form of idol worship. The Widow leads a revolutionary group of anti-feudal fighters from her late husband's barony; although nominally recognized as a baron by her peers they do not respect her, and the contempt is mutual. Little is known of the world beyond the Badlands, but it is implied that it is far less politically stable and environmentally sound than the Badlands. The mythical utopian city of Azra is believed to exist outside the Badlands but most dismiss it as a legend.
