On October 31, 1992, X Men premiered on the line up as part of the Fox Kids Saturday line up. This was back in a time with no cell phones or internet or tablets. So the kids that grew up during that time knew how important the Saturday morning cartoon shows were. X Men was on the same network as great shows like Bobby’s World, Tiny Toon Adventures, the original Mighty Morphine Power Rangers, and Animaniacs. X Men was one of the first cartoon shows based of a comic book to hit the tv for viewing. X Men brought diversity and a different of entertainment to the tv. Considering the show is based around mutants and characters that are different in many ways. Kids and adults both loved the show and it’s still a hit to this day.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80’s, there wasn’t much diversity then in characters or shows. The whole idea behind mutants is great. I think that Storm is one of the charters that is still a fan favorite for many reasons. From the mutants that had powers to control things, to the ones that would cause problems in society. It showed how people can also be fearful of things they don’t understand or things that were different. Storm was created by writer Len Wein. Draw by artist Dave Cockrum in May1975. Cockrum originally made the character a male. Later chasing it because he felt it better fit a woman. Making it his first black female super hero. She was born from a African witch priestess. She had the powers to control the weather and atmosphere. Also considered one of the most powerful mutants on the planet. Her birth name is Ororo Munroe. Her parents were killed. She grew up a orphan and master pick pocket. Which is how she later meets Professor X. Who convinces her to join the X Men. The X Men, a group which sole purpose is to bring equal rights to mutants. Storm marries her childhood sweetheart Black Panther.

Storm’s costumes has changed many times over the years. From the comic book to the movies. There has been about15 different types of costumes over the years. Black costumes to white costumes and the teams famous blue and yellow jumpsuit. All varying from different cuts and trims, crowns and hair styles. Out of all these styled costumes of Storm. I choose to do the 1992 white costume, from the Saturday Cartoon line up. It was one of my favorite costumes. I figured if I was gonna wear it to Comic Con all day. It would have to be a black version. Since white wouldn’t do. So I designed a black version and went from there.

When I sketched this costume out I made sure that I kept the design as close to the character as possible. To me the one of the most important things when cos playing is to make sure it looks like character with out the person asking. I first choose to buy solid black performance dance bodysuit. When I went to buy fabric for the costume. I bought 2 and half yards of solid black fabric for the cape. I also bought gold performance fabric for the trim. I didn’t have to buy and red fabric for the X Men button since I has some left over from another costume. The first thing I did was work on the bodysuit. I cut and pinned the gold as part of the collar on the bodysuit. I then went and measured the fabric for the strip for the waist band. Then measured from top shoulder blade down to chest, down to waist. Then cut that and pinned it onto bodysuit. Then I measure the first piece to make the gold strip. I sewed that on and that was it for the bodysuit really.

I went onto do the buttons on the cape. To me this was a important part of the costume. As the is a widely know symbol and if to wasn’t right people would be able to tell. I looked at different tops to use. I choose tops since I thought this was the best way to keep the buttons secure and give a true to costume look. I ended up using Bath and Body butter tops. I used Mod Podge and painted a layer on top. I covered it with black performance fabric. I used the top button to draw a circle on red fabric and cut the red fabric a inch smaller. I also put Mod Podge of end of red fabric. This helps keep the fabric fibers from fraying. This is worth doing. I also wrapped dental floss around end the tops to keep fabric in place when drying. I glued the red circles inside the black. I used the black performance fabric to cut 4 strips of fabric to make the X. I made them about a inch and half long and 1 centimeter thick. I glued those of top as the X on both buttons. Lastly I added a trim of gold around the outside of the buttons. These same button with X are the ones the will go on end of cape to connect with bodysuit.

I decided to make the cape removal since I knew it might get heavy and would want to take off. That meant the button had to be made right and reinforced because of the capes weight. I left enough space right about button to sew on a snap. I then went back and sewed the other sew on connect snap piece to the bodysuit itself. So that meant the cape weight would be mostly on the cape snaps. Rather the gules tops. To me the cap I had one big price of fabric. I draped it over my shoulders, so I knew were the fabric would lay. And I marked it. To me this was another important part. After I knew were the tops/ buttons would lay. It would be easier for me to figure out the wrapping of wrists. Because if it was too long I would trip, but too short wouldn’t look right. So I draped it from holding fabric connected to wrists. I formed the fabric to connect to my wrists. I sewed on the gold trim.
