Grammy Award-winning film, TV, and symphony composer Mateo Messina continues his collaboration with director Jason Reitman for Hulu’s original series CASUAL. Messina and Reitman have worked together on numerous projects, including Juno. Casual centers on a newly divorced single mother, Valerie (Michaela Watkins) living with her brother while they both navigate single life and juggle raising her daughter. Messina intentionally utilizes out of tune instruments to highlight the uncertainty of the characters, with a light yet hopeful score. All three seasons of Casual, composed by Messina, are available on Hulu. Mateo Messina’s recent TV credits include the Epix’s series GRAVES, currently on its second season, and Discovery Channel’s miniseries HARLEY & THE DAVIDSONS. Mateo Messina’s Graves score is nominated for a “Jerry Goldsmith” award from the BSO Spirit Associations International Film Music Festival, held in Malaga, Spain.

Graves was created by Joshua Michael Stern (Jobs) and directed by Bob Balaban (Girls, Broad City) and follows former President Richard Graves (Nick Nolte) after an epiphany that mistakes he made while in office twenty years prior have caused a trickledown effect that could ripple waves of damage for years. Mateo Messina accompanies the comedy with a gentle, inspirational score that propels the characters through their often rocky revelations.

Harley and The Davidsons, directed by Stephen Kay (Friday Night Lights, Sons of Anarchy) and Ciaran Donnelly (The Tudors) is based on a true story that charts the birth of the iconic motorcycle bearing the same name during a time social and technological change at the turn of the 20th century. Messina wanted to enforce a strong orchestral score to accentuate the unique challenges each character is faced with on their difficult pursuit to achieve the dreams and ambitions entangled in the world of luxury motorcycle production.

Traversing between studios in Hollywood and Seattle, Messina has delivered his unique style of scoring for over a decade, including critically acclaimed score Juno. Prior to working together on “Juno” Jason Reitman and Mateo Messina were a DJ duo known as Bad Meaning Bad¸ and performed mashups. Since the age of 23, Messina has written, produced, and premiered 17 symphonies, all of which have been benefit concerts at Seattle Children's Hospital. To date, he has raised over $1,000,000 for the hospital. Messina’s film credits also include Butter and Barely Lethal. He also contributed additional music for the Oscar nominated films August: Osage County and Up in the Air.
