US press release 28th february 2017:
“SILENCE - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is now available everywhere. The experimental score is composed by the husband and wife team of Maestro Kim Allen Kluge & Kathryn Kluge. Based on Shusaku Endo’s 1966 acclaimed novel SILENCE marks the first collaboration for the composers with director Martin Scorsese. Silence tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson). Contrary to the motifs of SILENCE, upcoming from the Kluges is the contemporary classical orchestral album, American Concerto for Piano & Orchestra. The Concerto reflects various musical influences and ideals in America, and will be released March 24th.
The Kluges bring an epic sense of drama to their work – from the music Kim and Kathryn compose in their studio for film and live performance, to the podium where Kim electrifies audiences as an award-winning conductor. They have written for music icons ranging from jazz legend, Branford Marsalis to classical virtuoso, Midori.
The SILENCE score received critical-acclaim, but The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ruled the music ineligible for an Oscar© because, the rules state that “the original score must be a substantial body of music.” For SILENCE, the Kluges developed a ground-breaking score that incorporated nature sounds and other organic elements within their original compositions. Scorsese wanted an untraditional score, with Kim Kluge explaining, “Scorsese wanted to explore a unique sound world.” The Kluges then created a score which incorporated ambient noises—wind, rain, waves crashing, the click of cicadas mixed with instruments such as a Japanese lute and a Western European viola da gamba, to reflect the film’s period and geography.”
Kathryn and Kim Kluges’ upcoming album, American Concerto for Piano & Orchestra consists of three movements all with varied moods. The concerto celebrates the melting pot of musical influences and ideals in America. Alexander Payne, the Oscar-winning writer, director of SIDEWAYS, THE DESCENDANTS and NEBRASKA describes an excerpt of the concerto as, “Genuinely beautiful. It made me think of Aaron Copeland recalling, as an old man, the childhood memory of the start of a big snowstorm.”
The American Concerto for Piano & Orchestra’s first movement reflects folk melodies from the American Songbook, with the second movement drawing inspiration from the ideals of freedom, and the third movement traveling through the expansive American landscape, culminating with a joyful and celebratory mood.
As a conductor, Maestro Kluge garnered the Best Conductor Award given by the Washington, D.C. Area Music Awards. He has also conducted the Sinfonietta de Paris, Les Solistes Parisiens, the Mannheim Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the Baltimore Lyric Opera. He is currently Music Director/Conductor of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C, and he co-founded Capital City Opera.
As a composer and pianist, Kim Kluge’s compositional approach reflects Western and Global influences, classical and popular styles. He was valedictorian of Oberlin Conservatory of Music and received training at Tanglewood Music Center, as well as in Siena, Italy. He has collaborated with stage directors, choreographers, artistic directors, and many of the world’s finest musicians.
Kathryn Vassar Kluge is a pianist, composer and songwriter. Though classically trained, Kathryn Kluge is influenced by jazz, pop and folk styles. She has an educational background in Music, English Literature and Film Studies. Coming from a family of musicians and artists, she brings a multi-arts perspective to her work. As the former Executive Director for the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra she developed inter-arts programs in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Phillips Collection.
