When the shelves of our local supermarkets begin to be filled with Christmas chocolates and the catalogues of toys arrive in our letterboxes, we begin to think about the end of year celebrations and what better way to celebrate than with a Disney classic?
Disney, in all its splendor, has taken over the Mogador theatre in Paris with a magical adaptation of a universal French myth, Beauty and the Beast. After opening at the Palace theatre on Broadway in 1994, more than 35 million people have seen the show in 13 countries and more than 115 cities.
In this show we rediscover the much loved songs from the 1991 film: Belle, Gaston and Be Our Guest (C’est la fête). During this song, we see Disney magic transform daily objects into living people, the spoons dance with the salt and pepper, the plates remind us that we are in the same city as the Moulin Rouge, and the rug turns cartwheels that take our breath away.
There is even an operatic interlude performed by the Wardrobe.
It would be impossible not to mention that a real orchestra is present under the stage, and their talent gives a real power to the music.
The characters are very well played. Beauty is as we would imagine her, a sweet combination of beauty and innocence along with a real strength of character. What a spirit of sacrifice and humility when she begs the beast to let her take the place of her father, Maurice, so that he can be free.
Despite his brute and monstrous appearance, we can clearly see the beast awaken to the possibility of love.
We cannot forget the promising talent of the little boy in the role of the teacup. It was with a great deal of emotion that we saw him run to find his mother, the teapot, at the end of the show.
The changes in the scenery were a technical achievement. Not an appearance, disappearance, lightning or fog were forgotten and were all carefully recreated by the technicians behind the scenes.
At the end of the show, the cast were rewarded by a standing ovation and only one question remains on the audience’s lips, why did Disney wait so long before sharing their magic with the Parisians? We can only hope that Paris will appreciate this timeless classic and that the show will be sold out every night.
