The Out-Laws is a Netflix film that, despite its derivative concept and association with Happy Madison Productions, manages to deliver some genuinely entertaining moments. Directed by Tyler Spindel, known for his work on comedies such as The Wrong Missy, the film introduces us to the dysfunctional Browning family and their encounter with Parker's enigmatic parents, the McDermotts. While not a groundbreaking film, The Out-Laws certainly has its charm.
The story revolves around Owen Browning, a socially awkward bank manager played with unwavering energy by Adam DeVine. Owen Browning is about to marry the beautiful and poised yoga teacher Parker, played by Nina Dobrev. However, Owen's anxiety skyrockets when he realizes that he's never met Parker's parents, who have been living with a South American tribe for years. Little does he know that the McDermotts, played by the delightful duo Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, are no ordinary parents, but infamous bank-robbing outlaws on the run. As soon as Brosnan and Barkin make their entrance, covered in black leather and exuding the aura of classic comic criminals, it's clear that their chemistry with DeVine will be one of the film's highlights. The tension between the McDermotts and Owen leads to unexpected circumstances, including a daring bank robbery and encounters with a ruthless crime lord played by Poorna Jagannathan.
If DeVine's antics aren't universally appreciated, his performance is complemented by a talented cast. Lauren Lapkus, Lil Rel Howery, Richard Kind and Julie Hagerty deliver memorable moments and prove that the film's strength lies in its ensemble. Their sense of humor and commitment to their roles enhance the material and inject much-needed energy into the story.
Director Tyler Spindel takes a scattershot approach, resulting in a film that feels disjointed at times. The humor isn't always there, with some jokes falling flat or relying too heavily on sexual innuendo. However, when the film reaches cruising speed, it delivers genuine laughs. Visually, the film adopts a lively, colorful aesthetic, the cinematography reflecting the frenetic energy of the story. The action sequences, particularly the car chase in the second half, are well staged and inject the plot with much-needed excitement. Spindel's direction maintains a steady pace, even if the film occasionally falls into the easy category.
In terms of originality, The Out-Laws is a disappointment. It draws on classic comedies such as Meet the Parents and The In-Laws, but lacks the same finesse. The plot is familiar and the characters often seem to belong to completely different films, which detracts from the film's cohesion. The Out-Laws is therefore a passable comedy in Netflix's original line-up. Yet the film benefits from the talent of its supporting cast, whose performances add depth to the otherwise banal plot. Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin shine as the daring McDermotts, infusing their roles with a mixture of charm and self-awareness. The film also pays homage to Adam Sandler's previous comedies, maintaining the tradition of generous supporting roles.
The Out-Laws is a film that doesn't aspire to be revolutionary or groundbreaking. It's a light comedy that aims to entertain, and while it doesn't achieve greatness, it offers enough laughs to make viewing enjoyable. If you're in the mood for a no-holds-barred comedy with a good cast and a few laughs along the way, The Out-Laws is watchable if not a great comedy.
