Mulder's Review

The 80's were a gat period for manly action movies with actors like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Seagal, Bruce Willis and Jean Claude Van Damme. These American heroes capable of fighting alone against an army without losing their sense of humor have marked a whole generation of spectators and above all revolutionized the cinema in their own way. If films like the cinematographic saga John Wick succeed in imposing themselves in the hearts of the spectators, it is because they perpetuate the tradition of the lone hero in search of justice.

One suspects that the script of Fansu Njie Daniel Stisen and Andreas Vasshaug wanted to find this form of action films as simple as effective. When discovering Last Man Down, one thinks of the film Commando (1985) by Mark L. Lester in which Arnold Schwarzenegger played a former soldier of the elite commandos of the Delta Force, Colonel John Matrix, who had to oppose an entire troop of mercenaries to free his daughter.

After civilization succumbs to a deadly pandemic and his wife is murdered, John Wood (Daniel Stisen), a former special forces soldier abandons his duty and becomes a hermit in the northern wilderness. Years later, a wounded woman appears on his doorstep. Maria Johnson (Olga Kent). She was a guinea pig in a laboratory trying to find a vaccine to save humanity. Her pursuers believe her blood is the key to a worldwide cure. Although John is reluctant to get involved, all his doubts are removed when he discovers that Maria's pursuer is none other than Commander Stone, the man who murdered his wife. The script of Last Man Down is certainly not original but was made to give rise to many effective action scenes despite a budget that we feel reduced. The great care given to the photography and the invested direction makes this simple B movie a very recommendable film as it holds on to the last minute.

Shot in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, Last Man Down shows that it is possible with reduced means to create action films that are certainly minor but that can be watched with pleasure. The story is a pretext for action scenes choreographed with undeniable talent and care. We can only advise you to discover this film which will make you spend a pleasant evening on your sofa.
