The Tribeca festival presented many excellent surprises such as discovering a documentary that we had missed when it was broadcast in France on Arte on May 12, 2020. Produced by Martin Laurent, and Jeremy Zelnik under the banners of Arte France, Telemark, and Temps Noir, Kubrick by Kubrick is a fascinating documentary on a gifted director who knew how to impose himself by giving life to several films qualified as masterpieces of the cinema that it is 2001, A Space Odyssey (1968: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987), Eyes Wide Shut (1999) (with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman).
The main strength of this documentary directed by Gregory Monro is to allow a better understanding of the work of Stanley Kubrick and many anecdotes on the shooting of these. Considered as one of the greatest directors, he gave few interviews, so this documentary film allows us to listen to him talk about his work. We learn that Full Metal Jacket was not shot in Vietnam because Stanley Kubrick shot all his films near his home.
From new exclusive recordings of detailed interviews with the mythical director, which span 30 years and ruminate on his philosophies, documentary filmmaker Gregory Monro delivers a truly fascinating documentary that allows us to revisit the work of a mythical director who continues to inspire many directors and to be the main subject of many student theses.
