Mulder's Review

As part of the American festival SXSW we were able to discover several American independent films. Some of them caught our attention like Mallory Everton's Recovery, Stephen Meek. In this story set in the middle of the global covid 19 pandemic, in March 2020, two sisters have to change their schedule at the last minute and undertake a cross-country journey to save their grandmother in her retirement home.

While many recent films have preferred to incorporate this global covid 19 pandemic into horrific stories, directors Mallory Everton, Stephen Meek opt for a successful mix of a comedy and a fast-paced road movie in which comedians Whitney Call and Mallory Everton (also screenwriters) form two inseparable sisters who must cross the United States and meet many people on their long journey.

Recovery is not a simple comedy, however, perfectly exploiting the theme of the effects of this global pandemic and everything that has had to change in our lives. Far from being a simple concept film exploiting our current time and being the first comedy about this period, Recovery shows a real care for its dialogues and for making its two main characters endearing while most of the film takes place in the car of one of them.

This independent film shows that to make a good comedy it is often enough to have two good actresses, an attractive and cleverly written script and an inspired direction. Certainly this film was one of the highlights of the SXSW festival and we are already looking forward to seeing it again soon, whether it's on a streaming platform like Netflix or Prime Video or on direct VOD. Certainly, Mallory Everton is an actress with an undeniable charm that we will hear about again.
