Mulder's Review

"In Bridget Jones' Diary (2001), Sharon showed that she was capable of making a film that is both very funny and very moving, that puts you in the shoes of a modern woman. In my opinion, Godmothered has all the assets to be so successful. ». - Justin Srpinger

The end of the year is approaching and many films highlighting the Christmas spirit are invading our screens, such as these three successful films that Netflix has been offering for the past few days: Jingle Jangle: A christmas Jouney, The Princess Switch: Switched Again and The The Christmas Chronicles 2. Disney + is not to be outdone and offers in France, one year late, Noelle by Suzanne Todd and especially Godmothered that we have discovered this week.

Based on a screenplay by Kari Granlund, Melissa Stack, the new film by director Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones's Diary) (2001), Bridget Jones's Baby (2016)) Godmothered is an enchanting comedy highlighting the magical spirit of Christmas but also revisiting the world of fairies. When discovering the first images of this comedy, some will think of the world of Harry Potter not only through this village where the fairies live but also this school where Eleanor (Jillian Bell) an apprentice fairy godmother is studying. This young fairy discovers that her profession as a fairy godmother may be coming to an end. Determined to show that fairy godmothers are still needed, Eleanor tries to help a girl whose wish has been ignored, only to discover that she has become a woman named Mackenzie (Isla Fisher) who, having lost her husband years ago, has become disillusioned with the idea of a happy forever.

By revisiting the theme of fairy tales, we follow Eleanor who must not only adapt to the world of humans devoid of magic, but also do everything possible to achieve her goal and transform the existence of her protégée. Mackenzie, however, has triggered a succession of disasters along the way and appears to many to be an eccentric and irresponsible woman. One will appreciate the numerous comic scenes in which Jillian Bell proves to be perfect in the role of a good fairy who has not yet mastered all her abilities.

The director Sharon Maguire certainly delivers us a really striking film but which can be watched with pleasure thanks to the presence of the actresses Isla Fisher and Jillian Bell. In the same way, by avoiding excessive use of special effects, the film keeps a very 80s oriented tone and allows us to have a good time. At the end of a difficult year that many will like to forget forever, it is good to relax in front of such a fantastic comedy that avoids plunging into great sentimentality and instead emphasizes strong values such as family, the fact of surpassing oneself and above all that union is strength.
