Mulder's Review

The film The Croods from Dreamworks Animation studios was released in 2013 and was distributed in France by Twentieth Century Fox France. It met with worldwide success and rave reviews praising both the quality of its animation but especially its excellent script presenting us an atypical prehistoric family. His characters had retained all our affection and we hoped to be able to find them in new adventures. As time went by, Dreamworks Animation Studios experienced very significant economic difficulties ($263 million loss in the fourth quarter of 2014) and was bought out in April 2016 by Comcas, which led Universal Pictures to replace 20th Century Fox in the worldwide distribution of these films from this year 2016.

It must be acknowledged that this has not only allowed Dreamworks Animation to get a second wind, but above all to regain worldwide success, as recently shown in the excellent Dragons 3: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019), Abominable (2019) and especially The Trolls 2: Trolls World Tour (2020). The Croods: A New Age) shows once again that this great animation studio has nothing to envy to the giant The Walt Disney Pictures because its animation is perfect and its scenario perfectly rhythmic to please both a young audience but also an adult audience who will find the time of a film his soul as a child. Like Dreamworks Animation, the Croods family had to adapt and find a way to survive in a world in perpetual evolution.

From the very first minutes of the film we find the same unbridled atmosphere as in the first part. We also learn how Guy before joining the Croods family lost his parents and started looking for a place called "Tomorrow". This new film thus takes again after time after the events of Croods and shows us how this family is always in search of a place to settle down. On their road strewn with all kinds of pitfalls, they will meet another family the Bettermans of old friends of Guy's parents. The Bettermans' daughter Dawn already knew Guy because they grew up together. The cultural clash between the prehistoric Croods family and this family which proves to be at the forefront of progress and have built a real ecological infrastructure will make this new story so full of excellent ideas but above all give a new rhythm and a new meaning to the Croods adventures. Unfortunately a real danger weighs on the Bettermans and after having rejected having wanted to get rid of the Croods, they are going to have to act together to survive and find calm.

It is interesting to see the impact that the animated series Dawn of the Croods had between its two films and to see the allusions found in The Croods: A New Age (The Croods: A New Age) to it being certain cave paintings. The construction of the film reminds us in some way that it is built as a succession of chapters. It emerges a perfect rhythm and especially we find with pleasure seven years after this family of Croods so endearing. One always cracks as much in front of Thunk the young child of the Croods and their daughter Sandy seems to live the great love with Guy...

We also find the same vocal casting whether in the original version (which we recommend as a dress rehearsal) or in the French version. Thus Emma Stone (Eep), Nicolas Cage (Grug), Ryan Reynolds (Guy), Catherine Keener (Ugga), Clark Duke (Thunk), Cloris Leachman (Gran) find their characters. It is the same for Bérengère Krief (Eep), Dominique Collignon-Maurin (Grug), Kev Adams (Guy), Françoise Vallon (Ugga), Benjamin Bollen (Thunk) in the French version.

Perfectly calibrated as a great family entertainment perfect for this holiday season, we regret that the release of this film is however postponed in France to January 27, 2021 while it was released in the United States this week. So we can only advise you to be patient because The Croods: A New Age easily imposes itself as one of the best animated films of this year and you will laugh and be moved by this crazy prehistoric universe, rich in ideas and irresistible ...
