Mulder's Review

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run is based on the animated television series Sponge Bob, SquarePants, which has been airing since May 1, 1999 on Nickelodeon.... Directed and written by former writer Tim Hill (Muppets from Space (1999), Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007), Hop (2011) and more recently The War with Grandpa (2020)), this third feature film after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2005) and Sponge Bob the Movie : The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water (2015) is the first film in the franchise to be fully animated in CGI instead of traditional 2D animation.

This new orientation allows the franchise to offer a family adventure with several reading levels, appealing not only to young audiences but also to adults who appreciate good animated films. It will also be appreciated that in the original version, the regular voices of the series resume their respective roles from the series and the previous films. The rather simplistic plot is devoted to the quest of Sponge Bob and his friend Patrick to find the snail Gary who was kidnapped and taken against his will to the lost city of Atlantic City. As in the now cult animated series and the first two films, this new story manages to find all the charm of the Sponge Bob universe. Punctuated by numerous cameos with Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, Danny Trejo, Sponge Bob - The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a successful family entertainment for the whole family.

The undeniable quality of this film comes in particular from the great care given to the animation and the numerous secondary characters that Sponge Bob and Patrick will meet. In spite of an overly simplistic scenario, the many ideas that punctuate this story mean that we can only allow ourselves to be immersed in this film full of humor but which also knows how to be moving, notably by showing us the first meeting of Sponge Bob and Patrick at summer camp during their childhood.

Originally scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release by Paramount Pictures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was released in theaters in Canada only on August 14, 2020 and will be available on Netflix as of November 5. Once again Paramount Pictures is looking to Netflix to offer a film with the scale to have a theatrical release and reach a large audience, but the current global pandemic and the repeated closure of our theatres has unfortunately been fatal to this film being released on big screens.
