For all those who grew up discovering John Carpenter's films and horror movies like C.H.U.D. (1984), Street Trash or The Blob (1988) , Tar should probably remind them of that sumptuous period of the 80's in which horror movies were original, had a social dimension and really managed to scare us. After directing several short films (Guest House (2013), The Walk (2014)) and a documentary Restoring Tomorrow (2016), Tar is the first film co-written and directed by Aaron Wolf.
It cannot be said often enough that making a good genre film, in this case a horrific thriller, is not only based on a perfectly mastered script, an inspired direction and above all special effects serving to highlight the story and not to hide its weaknesses. Faced with this current overbid in horror films, it is good to find this scent of horror films that have marked our past. In this sense, Tar easily imposes itself as a perfect mix between a social drama, a painting of Los Angeles and especially the monster movie with its creature as original as it is successful. One can easily feel the influence of the influential directors of the 80's to bring this story to life.
After an introductory scene reminding us of a legend dating back 40,000 years with demonic creatures for which sacrifices were made and whose remains seem to be buried since an illustrious period, work will be done in an old building in Los Angeles and will unfortunately free a creature whose hatred will leave in its wake several dead. Tar's great strength is to compensate for its modest budget with an inspired realization and especially the presence of well-known actors such as Timothy Bottoms and Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves (1989), The Green Mile (1999)...).
While today's genre cinema prefers at all costs to focus on action to the detriment of action, Aaron Wolf, who plays the lead role, was able to inject a real depth to these characters and above all to show an original look at Los Angeles, far from the tourist places too often shown in American cinema. This film will thus bring us to have a new look at Los Angeles and especially at these urban legends which are numerous in this city in perpetual evolution.
Tar imposes itself as an interesting genre film and above all allows us to discover a director, screenwriter and actor passionate about cinema who through this film wanted to pay tribute to the cinema that marked his childhood and nourished his imagination. Available from October 2nd in the United States in some cinemas, this film will be available in VOD also in the United States from October 20th and we advise you to discover it.
