Mulder's Review

Kheiron never ceases to surprise us. His third film after Nous trois ou rien (2015), Mauvaises herbes (2018), Brutus vs César is not only a comedy with a Dantesque cast, but above all a barely hidden tribute to the universe of certain comic strips, such as Astérix. However, it must be admitted that the result is rather disappointing, mainly due to an obvious lack of budget to realize the vision of a rather gifted director who seems more at ease in popular comedies than in directing a French-style blockbuster.

Brutus VS César is the French answer to the many Hollywood productions featuring a great cast, but unfortunately the care given to it is not felt at the level of editing and even less at the level of a script based solely on a failed plot whose main mission was to have Julius César (Ramzy Bédia) assassinated by one of his sons (Brutus / Kheiron). As much as the idea of rediscovering the charm of the big-screen adaptations of the Asterix adventures was a good idea, the treatment is cruelly lacking in ambition and is content to line up more or less successful scenes that are cruelly lacking in spice and the vision of a director capable of constructing successful action scenes and finding the perfect tempo conducive to numerous twists and turns.

In the same way, greater importance should have been given to the psychological construction of the main and secondary characters and not only rely on popular actors such as Thierry Lhermitte, Gérard Darmon, Pierre Richard and comedians of the new scene such as Bérangère Krief, Artus, Jérémy Ferrari, Reem Kherici and the all too rare Laura Laune. Unfortunately, a casting is not enough to make a good film, you need above all a carefully elaborated script.

Brutus vs. Caesar is therefore a major disappointment, a marketing product that had all the cards in hand but fails because it lacks ideas, inspiration and a directorable of changing genres and questioning himself.
