Kong: Skull Island is a new adaptation of the King Kong character that was first seen in cinemas 85 years ago. It is a must see for any fan of giant monster movies and is a prequel to the Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla movie of 2014. Kong is able to stand on its own as an action packed movie with terrific visuals of King Kong taking charge of his island, beautiful locations, and amazing costumes for the main cast and the local tribe of Kong worshipers.  Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts produces a story that brings to life the character of King Kong and will propel what is hoped to be a strong start to an expanded universe for the franchise. This film will be followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 and Kong vs. Godzilla in 2020.

With any movie, the visuals are one solid aspect that holds viewers’ attention and Roberts succeeds spectacularly with bringing you back in time to the Vietnam War, with rich characters that have major flaws. Samuel L. Jackson plays Preston Packard, a no nonsense military leader that wants to take on King Kong all on his own due the destruction of his team. He plays the crazed badass to the hilt.

Brie Larson ‘Mason Weaver’ and Tom Hiddleston ‘James Conrad’ play the love interest and major role of creating a dynamic positive charge to Jacksons’ negative bent on destruction. The only major surprise is John C. Reilly who plays a stranded Hank Marlow from the end of World War II. His character is added as a comedic add on that could have been cut from the movie. He plays his part well, and he adds levity that could open the movie to a wider audience, but can be unexpected if you had missed his role in any of the previews of the film.

Henry Jackman scores this film with music that sets the tone of each scene of the film just write and draws you deeper into the destruction that Kong creates and also leads you following along with the cast when they realize that Kong is the protector of Skull Island and possible the world. He scores the film using an orchestra and electric guitars that brings the Vietnam and 70’s film to life.

This is a must see film, for all audiences
