Movies - Angry Birds 3 : The First Trailer Reveals a Family Adventure Unlike Any Before

By Mulder, 29 june 2026

With the release of its first official trailer, Angry Birds 3 finally offers audiences a real glimpse into the next chapter of one of the most successful video game adaptations ever produced. After the first two films grossed over $500 million at the global box office and drew more than 1.5 million moviegoers in France alone, the franchise is set to return for the holidays on December 23, 2026, with a story that takes an unexpected yet universal turn: parenthood. Rather than simply ramping up the action, director John Rice and screenwriter Thurop Van Orman place Red—famous for his hot temper—in uncharted territory, where he discovers that raising a family can prove even more complicated than defending Bird Island. This is a clever evolution for a series that has gradually expanded beyond its mobile-game origins to become a true family entertainment brand, capable of balancing slapstick comedy with surprisingly sincere emotional moments. The trailer, first unveiled at CinemaCon before being released to the general public on June 29, perfectly illustrates this new direction, contrasting explosive comedy with the daily chaos of parenthood: Chuck and Bomb quickly discover the dangers of childcare when young Olly downs an entire bottle of soda in one gulp.

Much of the film’s appeal lies in the return of the core creative team that helped define the previous installments. John Rice, who previously co-directed Angry Birds Movie 2, returns to the helm, while Thurop Van Orman pens the screenplay, ensuring continuity in both tone and humor. The production once again brings together producers John Cohen, Dan Chuba, Carla Connor, and Namit Malhotra, while Heitor Pereira returns to compose the soundtrack after giving the first two films their energetic musical identity. Behind the scenes, Rovio Entertainment—now operating under the Sega Sammy Group—is handling production alongside Prime Focus Studios, while DNEG Animation is responsible for storyboards, art development, and animation, illustrating just how much the franchise has continued to grow in technical ambition since its cinematic debut nearly a decade ago. Production officially began in 2024, while voice recording sessions started later that year; fans got their first glimpse of Josh Gad back in the recording booth after he shared a photo on social media taken in the studio featuring Chuck.

The biggest change, however, lies in the story itself. Rather than focusing solely on the long-standing rivalry between birds and pigs, the third film introduces Red and Silver’s family, allowing the franchise to explore generational differences and the everyday challenges of parenthood without sacrificing the fast-paced comedy that has made the series a hit. Jason Sudeikis reprises his role as Red, while Rachel Bloom once again voices Silver, with their children now taking center stage in the story. Walker Scobell voices Glider, the adventurous eldest son; Emma Myers voices June, the independent and creative teenage daughter; and Psalm West makes his film voice-acting debut as the youngest of the chicks, Olly. Fuzzy, the family’s pet spider, voiced by James Austin Johnson, rounds out the cast. The first promotional images suggest that these young characters will have their own abilities and experience their own heroic moments, positioning them as much more than mere comic relief while naturally expanding the universe in preparation for future installments. In interviews accompanying the trailer’s release, Walker Scobell and Emma Myers both spoke about their childhoods spent playing the original Angry Birds games, which makes their involvement feel like a return to the franchise’s roots for a generation that first discovered it on smartphones before watching it evolve into a global animated franchise.

Alongside the main family, we find several familiar voices that audiences now associate with the franchise. Josh Gad once again voices Chuck, the character with boundless energy, while Danny McBride reprises his role as Bomb, and Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox return as Hal and Bubbles, respectively. The supporting cast is also expanding significantly with the addition of newcomers: Tim Robinson, Marcello Hernández, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, Sam Richardson, Lily James, Keke Palmer, MrBeast, and Salish Matter—reflecting Paramount’s desire to pair established Hollywood talent with personalities capable of connecting with a younger audience. Although many of these new characters have not yet been revealed, this impressive cast attests to the production’s growing scale and reinforces the studio’s confidence in the franchise.

The road to this third installment has been longer than many fans had anticipated. Rumors of a new Angry Birds movie had surfaced several years ago, before Rovio Entertainment officially confirmed production in June 2024. Initially developed while Sony Pictures was still handling distribution of the franchise, the project took a decisive turn when Paramount Pictures acquired the worldwide distribution rights in April 2025. The release date has also been changed several times, shifting from an initial window scheduled for 2026 to January 29, 2027, before finally being moved up to the highly competitive holiday season on December 23, 2026. This strategic positioning places the film squarely in the heart of one of the industry’s strongest family-oriented release periods—a wise choice given the franchise’s proven ability to attract audiences during the year-end holiday season.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of The Angry Birds Movie 3 is how it naturally reflects the evolution of its audience. When the original mobile game became a global phenomenon in 2009, millions of children were flinging birds across their smartphone screens. Many of those players are now teenagers or young adults, while a new generation has discovered the franchise through streaming platforms and the first two feature films. By making fatherhood Red’s central challenge, the filmmakers seem to acknowledge that the franchise itself has matured, without sacrificing the zany physical comedy, colorful animation, and frenetic energy that remain its hallmarks. If the trailer is anything to go by, the next battle for Bird Island may feature fewer heated confrontations between birds and pigs, and far more sleepless nights, family mishaps, and chaotic babysitting disasters—proof that sometimes, the greatest adventures begin at home.

Angry Birds 3 is directed by John Rice from a screenplay by Thurop Van Orman. Produced by John Cohen, Dan Chuba, Carla Connor, and Namit Malhotra, this animated feature film stars the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Emma Myers, Rachel Bloom, Walker Scobell, Danny McBride, Marcello Hernández, Tim Robinson, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, MrBeast, Salish Matter, Psalm West, Sam Richardson, James Austin Johnson, Lily James, and Keke Palmer, with music composed by Heitor Pereira. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film will be released in theaters including in France and the United States—on December 23, 2026.
