Festivals - FrightFest 2025 : The UK’s Horror Landmark Returns in Just a Few Days with an Epic and Diverse Line-Up

By Mulder, 17 august 2025

In only a few days, London will once again become the beating heart of horror as FrightFest 2025 prepares to unleash its 26th edition on the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square and the Odeon Luxe West End. Running from Thursday, August 21 to Monday, August 25, the UK’s number one horror and fantasy festival is ready to welcome thousands of fans for five days of cinematic terror, surreal wonders, and boundary-pushing storytelling. With sixty-nine features, nineteen world premieres, twenty-five main screen debuts, and entries representing fourteen countries across four continents, this year’s programme promises to be one of the most daring and eclectic to date. As co-director Alan Jones points out, FrightFest 2025 is set to be epic in every sense, continuing its tradition of celebrating the inventive, the transgressive, and the diverse while cementing its reputation as one of the Top Ten fantasy festivals in the world.

The festivities will begin with a major UK premiere courtesy of Signature Entertainment: The Home, the latest from James DeMonaco, creator of The Purge. Starring comedian and actor Pete Davidson in a performance already described as transformative, the film plunges audiences into the horrors lurking within a seemingly ordinary retirement home. On closing night, festivalgoers will be treated to the UK premiere of Influencers, the second Shudder original from director Kurtis David Harder, a stylish and unsettling horror about social media obsession destined to be one of the most talked-about genre films of the year. These bookend choices perfectly embody the festival’s ability to merge crowd-pleasing thrills with sophisticated, cutting-edge storytelling.

A central part of FrightFest’s appeal has always been the return of familiar names who have left their mark on the event’s history. This year’s line-up includes Erik Bloomquist with his new cult chiller Self-Help, Simon Rumley with the raw and uncompromising Crushed, and the ever-innovative Adams family with Mother of Flies, a spiritual sequel to their underground hit Hellbender. Adding to the excitement, Joe Begos brings Jimmy and Stiggs in the tradition of splatter classics, with never-before-seen footage from Eli Roth, while Neil Marshall will personally present the world premiere 4K restoration of The Descent, alongside members of the original cast. For longtime fans, this promises to be a nostalgic yet fresh experience—an unmissable reminder of how FrightFest has helped cement these directors in the horror pantheon.

Beyond these headline events, the main screens will deliver a dizzying array of premieres and bold visions. From the highly anticipated reboot of The Toxic Avenger to Toshiaki Toyoda’s surreal and violent Transcending Dimensions, FrightFest is setting the stage for variety and shock value. UK audiences will also get their first look at Bone Lake from Mercedes Bryce Morgan, the chilling What She Doesn’t Know co-written by Terry Castle, daughter of legendary showman William Castle, and Redux Redux from the McManus Brothers, a genre-bending exploration of grief and alternate realities. Highlights such as Gerard Johnson’s neon-soaked Odyssey, Illya Konstantin’s Night of Violence, and the French horror-comedy Flush will further broaden the scope, ensuring that every type of horror fan—from gore hounds to arthouse enthusiasts—will find something unforgettable.

The Discovery strands, meanwhile, remain the festival’s most adventurous section, spotlighting both new talents and unconventional narratives. This year’s world premieres include Gabriel Carrer’s Death Cycle, Matt Stuertz’s grotesque Human, and Tim Cruz’s unsettling Don’t Let the Cat Out. Audiences can also look forward to Raven Carter’s impressive debut Noseeums and the much-anticipated return of Dani Barker, who will direct, co-write, and star in Five, already pegged as a cult horror comedy in the making. The international scope continues with Alice Maio Mackay’s The Serpent’s Skin from Australia, Jay Reid’s Sick Puppy from Canada, and Viljar Bøe’s provocative Above the Knee from Norway. By showcasing such diverse voices, FrightFest reinforces its role as a global gathering place for innovative horror.

Complementing the fictional line-up are a series of documentaries that promise to enthrall horror aficionados. Among them, Captured Souls: In Conversation with Graham Humphreys by Chris Collier offers an in-depth look at one of Britain’s most iconic illustrators, while The Degenerate: The Life & Films of Andy Milligan sheds light on a divisive yet pivotal figure in horror history. With Sane Inside Insanity: The Rocky Horror Phenomenon, director Andreas Zerr chronicles the 50-year legacy of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, tracing its unlikely rise from a quirky stage play to a global cultural institution. These films will give audiences the chance to reflect on the history of the genre while celebrating its ongoing influence.

Animation also takes center stage with two remarkable additions: Latvia’s Dog of God, a delirious dive into werewolf trials and occult ecstasy, and Korea’s Gill from acclaimed director Jae-huun Ahn, continuing his tradition of visually arresting and thematically profound animated works. Their inclusion demonstrates how FrightFest continues to push the boundaries of what horror can be, extending beyond traditional live-action to new artistic horizons.

As Guillermo Del Toro once described it, FrightFest remains the Woodstock of Gore, and the 2025 edition looks set to embody that spirit once more. Founded in 2000 by Greg Day, Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy, and Ian Rattray, the festival has grown from its cult beginnings at the Prince Charles Cinema into a global leader for genre cinema, helping launch the careers of figures like Ti West, Christopher Smith, and Eli Roth. With side events in Glasgow, a growing publishing arm through FAB Press, and its ongoing partnership with Signature Entertainment under the FrightFest Presents label, the brand has become synonymous with discovering the next big thing in horror.

This year, the festival is also supported by The Horror Collective, the genre label of Entertainment Squad, founded by veteran producer Shaked Berenson, whose credits include Slaxx, Turbo Kid, and The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot. Their involvement reinforces FrightFest’s credibility as the ultimate destination for horror lovers and underlines the event’s vital role in shaping the future of the genre. With passes already on sale and excitement building, FrightFest 2025 is set to be more than a festival—it will be a landmark gathering of fans, filmmakers, and the macabre imagination, all converging in London for five unforgettable days of cinematic darkness.
