VideoGames - Summer Game Fest 2025: Capcom sets the gaming world alight with a trio of major announcements

By Mulder, 08 june 2025

Every year, Summer Game Fest is one of the most eagerly awaited events in the gaming world. But the 2025 edition was clearly marked by the boldness and firepower of Capcom, which kicked off the festivities with not one, but three major announcements that are sure to thrill both veteran gamers and new generations of players alike. Between the chilling reveal of Resident Evil™ Requiem, the spellbinding return of the Onimusha franchise with Way of the Sword, and the explosive arrival of four new fighters in Street Fighter™ 6 Year 3, the Japanese company has proven that it still knows how to surprise, excite, and reinvent its legends.

The most eagerly awaited moment was undoubtedly the reveal of Resident Evil™ Requiem, announced for worldwide release on February 27, 2026, on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). This ninth installment in the iconic survival horror saga returns to the very roots of terror, plunging players back into a reimagined Raccoon City, where it all began. But this time, thanks to the proprietary RE ENGINE, the game pushes immersion to its peak: disturbing facial animations, skin textures so realistic that you forget you're playing a game, and even details such as beads of sweat that add to the tension. This chilling realism serves a deeper purpose, where psychological horror takes center stage alongside intense action. The short but striking trailer offers a glimpse of a sticky, suffocating, almost organic atmosphere. And good news for fans: a first playable version of the game will be presented at Gamescom 2025, promising large-scale thrills in the future.

But Capcom isn't content to just play on fear. With Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the company is bringing out a sharp katana to cut through the current action game landscape. Unveiled in a striking live-action trailer, this new iteration offers a unique adventure combining sword fighting and Japanese supernatural elements. The player takes on the role of Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary figure in Japanese history, who finds himself facing a formidable opponent: Sasaki Ganryu, his eternal rival. Their duel, set in the iconic Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto, sets the stage for an epic saga. In addition to human combat, Musashi must also face increasingly formidable Genma demons, such as Kubi Akari, a soul thief, and Daidara, a hungry demonic ogre. The environment opens up to supernatural landscapes floating in the air, crossed by ethereal paths that can be summoned at will. This cocktail of history, fantasy, and fast-paced gameplay makes this new Onimusha a serious contender for the action game throne in 2026, still on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).

And finally, so as not to leave fans of versus fighting out in the cold, Capcom has pulled out all the stops with the revelations of Year 3 of Street Fighter™ 6. The lineup unveiled at the showcase is simply explosive: Sagat, the Muay Thai colossus and iconic boss from the very first Street Fighter, will return this summer with his charisma intact and his surgically precise moves; C. Viper, the high-tech heroine with formidable gadgets, will make her mark this fall with all the fiery spirit we've come to know since Street Fighter IV; Alex, the New York wrestler and well-known figure among Street Fighter V fans, will step back into the ring this winter; and finally, Ingrid, a rare and mysterious character, will shake up the battlefield in spring 2026. That's not all: Kenny Omega, professional wrestler and big fan of the series, made a notable appearance in the trailer, reinforcing the ever-stronger link between Capcom and the eSports scene.

Another big announcement is the return of the legendary Capcom Cup 12, which will be held in Tokyo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo temple, with a prize of $1 million for the winner. This event confirms the rise of competitive gaming and positions Capcom as a true leader in global esports. In addition, the publisher has also announced the availability of a complete edition of Street Fighter 6, featuring all 26 characters from the first two years, as well as all costumes and arenas released to date, on NS2, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This is sure to appeal to newcomers and veterans alike.

Founded in 1983, Capcom has never stopped redefining the standards of interactive entertainment, whether with Mega Man, Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney, Devil May Cry, or of course Resident Evil. And Summer Game Fest 2025 confirmed that the Japanese company, with studios in Osaka, Tokyo, the United States, and Europe, remains one of the strongest, most creative, and most influential pillars of the global video game industry. In an ever-changing industry, Capcom continues to prove that boldness, passion, and respect for its heritage are the best weapons for winning the hearts of gamers, year after year.
