Movies - Freakier Friday: A Magical Return to Chaos and Comedy in Disney’s Long-Awaited Sequel

By Mulder, 14 march 2025

More than two decades after Freaky Friday became a beloved family classic, Disney is bringing audiences back into the whirlwind chaos of body-swapping mayhem with Freakier Friday. The highly anticipated sequel will see the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in their iconic roles as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. With the first poster and trailer now unveiled, excitement is building for the theatrical release, scheduled for August 6, 2025, in France and August 8, 2025, in the United States.

The story of Freakier Friday takes place years after the first film’s infamous identity crisis. Anna, once the rebellious teenager, is now a mother herself, with a daughter of her own and an upcoming stepdaughter joining her family. As she juggles the complexities of her new life, the unthinkable happens again—lightning, it seems, really can strike twice in the same place. Tess and Anna find themselves once more thrown into each other’s shoes, quite literally, as they navigate the unique challenges of modern family dynamics in the most unexpected way. Directed by Nisha Ganatra (Mr. Robot), the film brings a fresh perspective while staying true to the comedic and heartwarming essence of its predecessor. The screenplay, written by Jordan Weiss and based on Mary Rodgers' classic novel, promises to blend nostalgia with new surprises, ensuring that both longtime fans and newcomers will be equally entertained.

Beyond Curtis and Lohan, Freakier Friday boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Familiar faces from the 2003 film are making a return, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Ryan Malgarini, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Stephen Tobolowsky, Lucille Soong, and Rosalind Chao. Joining them are rising stars Julia Butters (The Fabelmans), Manny Jacinto (Star Wars: The Acolyte), Sophia Hammons (Tête à tête), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (My First Times). Vanessa Bayer (Ibiza) is also a new addition to the cast, further rounding out an already stellar lineup. The film is being produced by Kristin Burr (Cruella), Andrew Gunn (Freaky Friday), and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Lindsay Lohan stepping into an executive producer role alongside Nathan Kelly and Ann Marie Sanderlin. The production wrapped filming in Los Angeles in August 2024, following months of speculation and anticipation from fans.

Speculation about a sequel to Freaky Friday had been swirling for years, but it wasn’t until May 2023 that Disney officially announced the project was in development. Elyse Hollander was originally attached as the screenwriter, with Curtis and Lohan confirming their involvement early on. By March 2024, Nisha Ganatra had taken the director’s chair, and Jordan Weiss was brought in to refine the script. The official title, Freakier Friday, was finally revealed by Curtis and Lohan during the 2024 D23 Expo in August, marking an exciting moment for fans eager to revisit the Coleman family’s unpredictable antics.

With a mix of comedy, heartfelt moments, and a fresh take on the classic body-swap concept, Freakier Friday has all the makings of another Disney blockbuster. The first film’s blend of humor and emotional depth resonated with audiences, and this sequel aims to recapture that magic while exploring new themes relevant to today’s families. The dynamic between Curtis and Lohan remains as strong as ever, promising witty banter and touching moments that made the original film so memorable.

Disney’s decision to release the film exclusively in theaters highlights the studio’s confidence in the project, betting on its nostalgic appeal and multi-generational fanbase to draw in large audiences. With a release set for summer 2025, Freakier Friday is poised to be one of the season’s most talked-about films, offering a delightful mix of comedy, chaos, and heartwarming life lessons. Will Tess and Anna be able to switch back once again, or will their new predicament prove even trickier than before? Audiences will have to wait and see when Freakier Friday hits the big screen next summer!
