Disney+ - Bref. is back: season 2 is coming to Disney+!

By Mulder, 31 january 2025

Thirteen years after making its mark on an entire generation, Bref. is back with a brand-new season 2. The cult series, which revolutionized French television with its ultra-short format and frenetic pace, is set to return in a new, expanded but still incisive form. From February 14, 2025, Disney+ will be broadcasting this long-awaited sequel, giving fans the chance to catch up with Je, the hero played by Kyan Khojandi, and his biting look at the absurdities of everyday life.

When Bref. first appeared on Canal+ in 2011, the series was an instant hit. Its format of 1-3 minutes per episode, ultra-dynamic editing, punchy lines and offbeat tone won over audiences in record time. Through the tribulations of its main character, a lost thirty-something in search of meaning, the series tackled universal subjects such as relationships, work, solitude, procrastination and social pressure with humor and finesse. All of this was supported by a chiseled writing style and a perfectly calibrated cast. In just 82 episodes, Bref. has established itself as an essential work of art, becoming a benchmark in French popular culture.

After the series ended in July 2012, creators Kyan Khojandi and Bruno Muschio, along with producer Harry Tordjman, had hinted that the Je story was over. But more than a decade later, the desire to tell a new page in her life came naturally. This time, there's no question of short segments: season 2 will be made up of six 30-minute episodes, allowing for a richer, more developed narrative. This new format will give greater depth to the characters and their trajectories, without losing what has made the series so successful: its pace, sincerity and hard-hitting humor.

While Je is obviously back in his forties, it's a different man we're discovering. With age come new questions, new responsibilities, but also the same doubts and disillusions. How do our friendships evolve over time? Can we still dream at 40? How do we deal with love, family and fear of the future? These are just some of the themes the series will tackle, with its unique narrative alternating between hilarious comedy and heartbreaking moments of sincerity.

Another highlight of season 2 is the return of the original cast. Baptiste Lecaplain (Baptiste), Bérengère Krief (Marla), Alice David (Sarah/that girl), Keyvan Khojandi (Keyvan) and Mikaël Alhawi (Ben) will all be back, bringing back the chemistry that made the series so charming. But new characters will also make their debut, embodied by prestigious actors such as Laura Felpin, Jean-Paul Rouve, Alexandre Astier and Doria Tillier.

To top it all off, a host of guests will enrich this already rich universe. The series has always known how to surround itself with distinguished guests, and this season will be no exception, with the participation of Orelsan, Gringe, Jonathan Cohen, Mister V, McFly & Carlito, Freddy Gladieux, Noémie Lvovsky and Bertrand Usclat, among others. A line-up of talent that promises scenes as funny as they are unpredictable.

In an official press release, the creators shared their enthusiasm for this long-awaited return:
“We're back with the desire to tell an even bigger story, filled with little stories, and to push all the sliders. We're delighted to welcome back our characters and create new ones to explore the themes that are dear to us: love relationships, the relationship with parents, new encounters that, at the turn of a conversation, allow us to evolve, friendship, parenthood and, above all, a hero who, at 40, is finally beginning to question himself.”

One of the challenges of this sequel will be to recapture the essence of Bref. while adapting it to the expectations of an audience that has grown up. The series captured the zeitgeist of its time, highlighting the concerns of thirty-somethings in the early 2010s. With season 2, it will have to strike a balance between nostalgia and modernity, tackling themes that are ever more in tune with today's society.

Finally, for those wishing to (re)discover the first season, Disney+ will be offering the complete Bref. series from February 14, allowing viewers to delve back into the origins of the series before moving on to the long-awaited new episodes.

With its revamped format, five-star cast and razor-sharp humor, season 2 promises to be a real event. Thirteen years after it went off the air, Bref. has lost none of its relevance and is poised to seduce a new generation of viewers, while offering old fans a return that's as enjoyable as it is unexpected. In short. It's all starting again. And it starts on February 14 on Disney+.
