At New York Comic Con 2024, Marvel Comics has thrilled fans by revealing an exciting new limited series for one of their most beloved heroes: Daredevil. Announced during the Marvel Fanfare panel with C.B. Cebulski, the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, the new series titled Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell is set to launch in 2024. This announcement comes with the added excitement of a creative reunion between best-selling artist Steve McNiven and renowned writer Charles Soule, both veterans of past Marvel successes.
This limited series marks McNiven’s long-awaited return to major Marvel Comics work, a full decade after his last significant project. McNiven is no stranger to delivering iconic visuals, having worked on major Marvel stories like Civil War and Old Man Logan. For Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell, McNiven teams up once again with Soule, who previously had a highly acclaimed run on Daredevil in 2015. The duo is known for their collaboration on the gripping Death of Wolverine storyline, and their reunion on this project promises to be nothing short of epic.
Set in a future version of the Marvel Universe, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell introduces a darker, grizzled version of Matt Murdock. In this dystopian world, Matt Murdock is no longer the Daredevil we know. His powers have faded, and the once-fearless hero is now powerless, but his indomitable spirit remains intact. Matt, the Man Without Fear, is still committed to helping the broken people of a city on the brink of collapse. But when a catastrophic event causes his powers to miraculously return, Murdock must once again step into the fray. With no allies by his side and evil running rampant through every corner, Daredevil’s chances seem slim. That is until Captain America entrusts him with a mission of utmost importance—one that might just hold the key to saving the world.
For Charles Soule, this project is particularly personal and significant. “I know whatever idea I write is going to be executed masterfully by Steve, and that level of trust allows you to take a lot of risks,” said Soule. He highlighted how unique this collaboration has been, emphasizing that the process of creating Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell is something that could only have been possible due to the deep trust and bond he shares with McNiven. Remarkably, the two have been working on the series for four years, with Soule stressing that the time spent perfecting the project has been well worth it.
Steve McNiven’s return to Marvel is also driven by his passion for storytelling and his admiration for the medium’s history. “I started out by going, why are not more people learning from Frank [Miller] and the storytelling he does,” McNiven explained. His admiration for Frank Miller’s groundbreaking work on The Dark Knight Returns has greatly influenced his approach to Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell. Steve McNiven has crafted the series with a similar intensity and has employed unique storytelling techniques, including a 16-panel grid structure, which challenges the conventional comic narrative and pushes for more inventive storytelling.
Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting more details, but the creative team’s shared vision and the unique setting of the future Marvel Universe have already set high expectations. The cover and interior artwork for the series have also been teased, showcasing McNiven’s signature style, which perfectly complements the gritty and somber tone of Soule’s narrative.
Slated to launch in April 2024, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell will be a three-issue limited series, with issue #1 written by Charles Soule and featuring both art and cover by Steve McNiven. As this powerful creative team comes together again, Marvel enthusiasts can look forward to another unforgettable chapter in the saga of Daredevil.
