Paramount+ today announced the launch date of its highly anticipated series Zorro starring Jean Dujardin. The series will air exclusively on Paramount+ in France from September 6, with subsequent releases planned in other Paramount+ markets in 2024, including the UK, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Latin America. To accompany this announcement, Paramount+ has also unveiled the first visuals and a teaser for the series.
Set in 1821, Zorro follows Don Diego de la Vega, now mayor of Los Angeles, as he fights against the corruption and injustice caused by businessman Don Emmanuel. Diego, who hasn't donned the role of Zorro in 20 years, is forced to pull out his mask and sword to protect his city. This double life will put a strain on his marriage to Gabriella, who is unaware of his secret. The series explores Diego's challenges in reconciling his two identities and maintaining his sanity in the midst of chaos.
In addition to Jean Dujardin, the series stars Audrey Dana, Salvatore Ficarra, André Dussollier, Eric Elmosnino and Grégory Gadebois. The 8-episode, 40-minute series is created by Benjamin Charbit and Noé Debré, and directed by Jean-Baptiste Saurel and Émilie Noblet. Zorro is an international co-production, involving France Télévisions, Paramount+, Le Collectif 64 (Marc Dujardin) and Bien Sûr Productions (Julien Seul), as well as other European partners. Filming took place in southern Spain, notably in the Almería region, known for its landscapes reminiscent of the American West.
The production mobilized a budget of 23 million euros, including the construction of impressive sets such as a replica of the city of Los Angeles, a casino, peon houses and an Indian village. Eusebio Larrea and Georges Huercano, responsible for co-production at RTL Belgium, expressed their enthusiasm for the project: "Zorro is a legendary character who is very present in the hearts of Belgians. This is real cinema for television. The modern writing and direction convinced us straight away. And let's not forget Jean Dujardin, who plays Zorro as real as life!
Belgian producer André Logie added: "To be able to co-produce such a prestigious series is a childhood dream for me. This co-production was made possible thanks to RTL Belgium and Wallimage." Jean Dujardin, who returns to television more than twenty years after his breakthrough in the shortcom Un gars, une fille, plays a more human Zorro, tormented and confronted with modern issues, particularly those of married life.
Paramount+ has also released a captivating teaser, offering a first glimpse of Jean Dujardin in costume as Zorro, ready to defend the oppressed with panache. Fans can look forward to a series rich in action, emotion and suspense, true to the spirit of the masked hero. France Télévisions' director of cinema, Manuel Alduy, underlined the importance of this family adventure project, illustrating a fruitful collaboration between several production entities.
Initial feedback from professionals present during the filming phases has been extremely positive, underlining the quality of the production and the commitment of the actors. The sandy, mountainous setting of the Sierra Alhamilla, used for several key scenes, recalls the aesthetics of the great westerns, providing an epic backdrop for this new adaptation of Zorro.
Don't miss the launch of Zorro on September 6 on Paramount+, an epic adventure that promises to captivate viewers with a Zorro more human and tormented than ever. For more information and to view the teaser, visit
