By Mulder, 25 april 2024

The Cannes Film Festival is proud to announce an exceptional program for the Cannes Classics section of the 2024 edition, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. A veritable showcase for the rich history of cinema, Cannes Classics is dedicated to the presentation of restored films, tributes to emblematic works and creators, and documentaries on key figures in the seventh art.

The Cannes Classics 2024 selection continues to stand out for its diversity and excellence, offering cinephiles and industry professionals privileged access to restored cinematographic works and special events. This year, the festival will welcome figures such as Faye Dunaway, Wim Wenders, and Costa-Gavras, who will present their work and take part in discussion sessions.

Highlights include the celebration of 100 years of Columbia Pictures with the restored screening of "Gilda" (1946), directed by Charles Vidor and painstakingly restored from the original negatives. The 40th anniversary of Wim Wenders' "Paris, Texas" (1984), the festival's Palme d'Or winner, will also be celebrated with a 4K restoration supervised by the director himself.

Cannes Classics is not limited to fiction. The segment also highlights documentaries such as Laurent Bouzereau's "Faye", which delves into the life and career of Faye Dunaway, and Ron Howard's "Jim Henson Idea Man", which explores the innovation and creativity of Jim Henson, the father of the Muppets.

The 2024 edition will pay tribute to cinema legends and films that have made history. The festival will celebrate the centenary of Costa-Gavras with the documentary "La Vérité Est Révolutionnaire - L'Aveu", which examines the cultural and political impact of his film "L'Aveu". In addition, the world premiere of Jean-Luc Godard's last film, made shortly before his death, will add a poignant note to this retrospective.

One of the highlights of Cannes Classics will be the opening screening of "Napoléon vu par Abel Gance" (1927). Restored for the occasion, this monumental work will be presented in its original splendor, accompanied by a discussion of its historical and cinematic importance.

Through Cannes Classics, the Cannes Film Festival reaffirms its commitment to the preservation of film heritage. By collaborating with archives, cinematheques and specialized laboratories around the world, Cannes ensures that these works can be enjoyed by new generations.

Cannes Classics 2024 is an open invitation to all film enthusiasts to gather on the Croisette to celebrate cinema in all its diversity and history. With screenings of restored films, captivating documentaries and the presence of legendary filmmakers, this edition promises to be an unforgettable tribute to the world of cinema.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the world's most prestigious and high-profile cinematic events. It aims to encourage the development of cinema in all its forms and to promote the film industry on an international scale.
