Manga - Grendizer : Xperienz returns to Paris with a new exhibition

By Mulder, 07 march 2024

Grendizer, the metal giant that has marked the hearts and minds of generations around the world, celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. This is an exceptional opportunity to look back on the history of an animated series which, far beyond its initial success, has left an indelible mark on the history of popular culture and continues to inspire admiration and nostalgia.

The brainchild of Go Nagai, the Grendizer saga (known in Japan as "UFO Robot Grendizer") began airing in Japan in 1975. It tells the story of Actarus, prince of the planet Euphor, who, fleeing the annihilation of his world by the empire of Vega, finds refuge on Earth. There, hiding under the identity of a simple farmer, he takes up the fight against Vega's forces with Grendizer, a super-powered combat robot, becoming humanity's last bastion against these ruthless invaders.

The series, with its themes of sacrifice, resilience and the struggle for justice, quickly captivated a wide audience. Its success extended far beyond Japanese borders, reaching Europe and particularly France, where it became a television phenomenon in the 80s. Grendizer is not just an animated series; she has become a symbol of rebellion, a hero for young people in search of ideals and adventure.

Grendizer's 45th anniversary is an opportunity to measure the extent of its influence. Over the years, Grendizer has inspired a wide range of productions in various artistic fields, from comics to film, music and even fashion. Artists from all horizons cite Grendizer as a major source of inspiration, proof of its universal appeal.

The series also played a crucial role in the introduction and popularization of Japanese animation in the West, paving the way for many other cult series. It helped to break down cultural barriers and create a genuine intercultural dialogue around animation, now considered an art form in its own right.

To celebrate this milestone, two major events are planned for April, each testifying to Grendizer's special place in the hearts of fans:

The commemorative exhibition
The first celebration takes the form of an immersive, interactive exhibition. It will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the Grendizer universe, exploring its origins, history and legacy. The exhibition will feature rare items: original drawings, design sketches, celluloid, as well as contemporary artworks inspired by the saga. It will be a unique opportunity to discover or rediscover the artistic richness of Grendizer and its influence on generations of artists. It will run from Friday April 5 to Sunday April 28, 2024 at the Mairie du 9e in Paris.

The Xperienz evening at Le Grand Rex cinema
The Grendizer Xperienz event at the Grand Rex, scheduled for April 18, 2024, promises an exceptional evening dedicated to fans of the famous robot. To mark the 45th anniversary of Grendizer's creation, a special evening is being organized in collaboration with Dynamic Planning and Toei Animation. It will feature an original symphonic concert performed by the XperienZ Orchestra, who will accompany famous Grendizer theme singers such as Jean Pierre Savelli, Enriqué, Noam, Michel Barouille and Bernard Minet, in a giant karaoke. This enhanced edition, following the success of the first RETRONIGHT at the Grand Rex, will also include a screening of films and episodes chosen by fans, hosted by Florian Gazan and Manu Levy, with the presence of guests such as Jacques Canestrier, DADDY K, Zemial, and other Grendizer-related personalities. Signing sessions and numerous surprises are also planned for this memorable event.

Grendizer's 45th anniversary is not only a celebration of the series itself, but also of its lasting impact on popular culture. These April events are proof of the love and admiration that fans still have for this icon. They offer an opportunity to come together, share memories, and pay tribute to a series that has indelibly marked the history of animation and far beyond. Grendizer remains a powerful symbol of hope and courage, a legacy that continues to inspire and amaze, 45 years after its first screen appearance.
