By Mulder, 06 march 2024

"We are finally able to see the fruits of post-pandemic productions and it's a sight to behold," said Michael Lerman, co-founder and director of film programming of The Overlook Film Festival. "This year's lineup is full of bigger, scarier, more personal, more bombastic fever dreams that are sure to haunt you for the rest of 2024."

The Overlook Film Festival, a pinnacle event celebrating the horror genre, proudly announces its initial lineup for the 2024 edition. Set to take place from April 4 to April 7 in the heart of America’s most haunted city, New Orleans, at the historic Prytania Theatres, this year’s festival promises an unforgettable blend of horror’s past and future.

Michael Lerman, co-founder and director of film programming, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s selection: "We are thrilled to showcase the post-pandemic era's most groundbreaking horror films. Our 2024 lineup is packed with larger-than-life, intensely personal, and utterly unforgettable cinematic experiences that will leave audiences haunted long after the festival concludes."

The festival will kick off with the Opening Night film, NEON’s "Cuckoo," directed by Tilman Singer and featuring Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, and Jessica Henwick. This film, a giallo-esque nightmare, sets the stage for a festival filled with groundbreaking horror cinema. The closing night will captivate audiences with the world premiere of Universal Pictures’ "Abigail," a new take on the vampire genre from the innovative directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with a special appearance by the Radio Silence team.

This year’s lineup includes 45 films from 11 countries, showcasing a mix of 22 features and 23 shorts, alongside four live presentations and five immersive experiences. Highlights include A24’s Sundance hit "I Saw the TV Glow" by Jane Schoenbrun, Larry Fessenden’s "Blackout," and Shudder’s slasher "In a Violent Nature," proving the festival’s commitment to presenting a diverse array of horror storytelling.

In addition to new releases, the festival honors horror’s rich history with retrospective screenings such as the 10th anniversary of Mike Flanagan’s "Oculus" and a 50th anniversary screening of "Phantom of the Paradise" with Paul Williams. A special focus on immersive experiences and live presentations, including a 10th anniversary panel for "Over the Garden Wall" and unique interactive events, ensures that the festival remains at the forefront of innovative horror entertainment.

Landon Zakheim, co-founder and executive director, stated, "Our expanded retrospective screenings and live events celebrate horror’s rich history while pointing toward its exciting future. We’re honored to create a space where horror enthusiasts can converge to experience the thrill of the genre in all its forms."

The Overlook Film Festival invites fans and creators alike to join in celebrating the horror genre’s past, present, and future. With a lineup that spans the spectrum from classic retrospectives to avant-garde new releases, the festival is a must-attend event for horror aficionados worldwid

The festival is programmed by Co-Founders Landon Zakheim & Michael Lerman; Program Manager Keith Garcia; Short Film Programmer Katie Rife; and Associate Director of Programming Sheryl Santacruz.

The 2024 Overlook Film Festival is dedicated to the memory of our friend and colleague Doug Jones (1970-2023).
