Netflix - Lupin Returns with a Bang: Netflix's Hit Series Premieres Season 3

By Mulder, 05 october 2023

It's a day of celebration for fans of the hit French mystery thriller series Lupin as the much-anticipated third season debuts on Netflix today. Created by George Kay and François Uzan, Lupin initially burst onto the streaming scene on January 8, 2021, with a captivating first installment. Since then, it has taken the world by storm, earning critical acclaim, a massive global following, and a reputation as one of Netflix's standout non-English language series.

The show stars the charismatic Omar Sy as Assane Diop, a modern-day master thief who draws inspiration from the legendary character Arsène Lupin, created by Maurice Leblanc in the early 1900s. Assane's journey for vengeance against the wealthy and influential Hubert Pellegrini forms the spine of the series' intricate and suspense-filled narrative.

What makes Lupin truly remarkable is its ability to weave thrilling heists, intricate plot twists, and action-packed sequences with a deeper exploration of contemporary cultural and racial issues in France. Assane Diop represents a fresh face of the country, challenging stereotypes and assumptions.

Moreover, the series delves into Assane's complex relationships, particularly his dynamic with his estranged wife, Claire, and their son, Raoul. George Kay, the series' showrunner, emphasizes that these relationships are fundamental to Assane's character development. They're permanent, he notes, highlighting the ongoing tension between Assane's criminal activities and his responsibilities as a father and ex-partner.

The third season promises to pick up where the previous one left off, with Assane locked in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with the relentless police detective Youssef Guédira. Kay has revealed that this season will incorporate fan culture and offer a fresh perspective on the French police force, making it even more engaging and suspenseful for viewers.

The captivating series also boasts stunning visuals, with filming locations ranging from iconic Parisian spots like the Louvre to the picturesque coastal town of Étretat. Étretat is significant not just for its breathtaking beauty but also because it was once home to the character's creator, Maurice Leblanc.

Beyond its thrilling narrative and intriguing characters, Lupin has had a significant cultural impact. It has revived interest in the original Arsène Lupin stories, with Leblanc's works becoming bestsellers in France once again.

As the third season unfolds with the promise of seven episodes, fans worldwide are bracing themselves for more heart-pounding heists, unexpected twists, and Assane Diop's signature charisma. Mathieu Lamboley's musical composition, combining classical heritage with modern sounds, continues to provide the perfect sonic backdrop for the series.

With its compelling storytelling, dynamic characters, and thought-provoking themes, Lupin remains a must-watch series that transcends borders and languages. It continues to captivate audiences in France and around the world, solidifying its status as a Netflix sensation. As fans settle in for another round of adventures with Assane Diop, Lupin continues to make its mark as one of the most successful non-English language series on the streaming platform.
