The first film in the series, Alien, was released in 1979 and was directed by Ridley Scott. It follows the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo, who encounter a xenomorph alien while investigating a distress signal on a distant planet.

The franchise has since expanded into numerous films, comics, novels and video games, and has become a popular and influential part of science fiction culture. The main plot of the franchise concerns the ongoing conflict between humans and Xenomorphs, who are known for their vicious and deadly nature, as well as their ability to adapt to any environment and reproduce rapidly.

The franchise also introduced a number of iconic characters, including Ellen Ripley, a warrant officer who becomes the main protagonist of the series, and Bishop, an android who serves as a recurring character in the later films. Other notable elements of the franchise include the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, a powerful and secretive organization that plays a major role in the series, and the Space Jockey, a mysterious alien race that is briefly glimpsed in the first film and expanded upon in subsequent films.

Overall, the Alien film universe is known for its dark and atmospheric tone, its exploration of themes such as the dangers of corporate greed and fear of the unknown, and its memorable and terrifying depictions of the Xenomorphs, who have become iconic figures in popular culture.
