So when the story, which was in that genre, came to me, I immediately became interested. And I became even more interested when I realized Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan were behind the project, because many of Chris's movies, like HomeAloneand Mrs.Doubtfire, marked my childhood. I rewatched all those films with my kids and saw how, three decades later, they were still connecting with them. Chupa is an upcoming fantasy adventure film directed by Jonás Cuarón, and starring Demián Bichir and Christian Slater. Produced by 26th Street Pictures, it is scheduled for release on April 7, 2023, on Netflix.

In August 2020, Jonás Cuarón was set to direct a chupacabra film, he co-wrote with Marcus Rinehart, Sean Kennedy Moore and Joe Barnathan. Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe produced the film under their 26th Street Pictures banner for Netflix. In June 2021, the film was titled Chupa, with Demián Bichir, Evan Whitten, Ashley Ciarra and Nickolas Verdugo joining the cast. Filming took place in multiple locations throughout New Mexico starting in August and running through October 2021.

Synopsis :
Shy 13-year-old Alex (Evan Whitten) flies from Kansas City to Mexico to meet his extended family for the first time. There he meets his grandfather and former lucha libre champion Chava (Demián Bichir), energetic, wrestling-obsessed cousin Memo (Nickolas Verdugo), and fearless, hip cousin Luna (Ashley Ciarra). But just as Alex begins to get his bearings, he discovers a mythical creature living under his grandfather’s shed: a young chupacabra cub, which he recognizes from stories of the feared, full-grown chupacabra, fabled to feed on farmers’ livestock. Alex soon learns that his new friend “Chupa” has a secret history with his family, and that dogged, dangerous scientist Richard Quinn (Christian Slater) is hunting the misunderstood creature to try and harness his powers. To protect Chupa from impending danger, Alex sets off on the adventure of a lifetime, one that will push the bonds of his newfound family to the brink, and remind him that life’s burdens are lighter when you don't have to carry them alone.
