At the source of cinema was magic. With one of its most extraordinary pioneers, Méliès, of course, but also its entire history marked by this marvelous mystery of illusion, that of the projection of a magnified reality onto the big white screen of our darkest fantasies.
As for fantasy cinema, magic is its most faithful offspring, its natural imagination, the breed of dreams or a diabolical spawn ... And it is with great pleasure that the festival will welcome for the first time, for the thirty years of the festival, a very great and talented magician in the person of David Jarre, who will chair the jury shorts.
At his side, Frédérique Moreau, an enlightened lover of protean fantasy cinema, writer for Nicolas Boukhrief, Laurent Achard or Alain Guiraudie, responsible with Jean-Pierre Dionnet for the great hours of La Nuit Gore on Canal +, and director of a short film in homage... to lycanthropes!
And since we are talking about werewolves, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and mysterious of the year (Jackie Caillou by Lucas Delangle) that we will welcome. A young actress with a first name in the form of an invitation to the genre, Lou Lampros, with an elegant and precocious film career (with Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Élie Wajeman, Wes Anderson, Emmanuelle Bercot or Olivier Assayas). She is part of the list of sixteen female revelations of the César 2023.
Ophélie Bau burst onto the scene of French cinema with apodictic force, first with Abdellatif Kechiche in Mektoub My Love and then in Vaurien by Peter Dourountzis, where she played opposite Pierre Deladonchamps, her colleague in this year's feature film jury. She was part of the list of sixteen Female Revelations of the César 2022.
The future will also be discussed with François Descraques, a traveler like no other, a young shooter of a new French-style fantasy, tinged with comedy and futurism (Le Visiteur du futur, Dark Stories, Rock Macabre...).
Finally, the youngest of this grand jury for short films is an unseen face, who went through the UFO films of his enchanting father (Chez Gino, Asphalte and This music plays for no one), and was nominated among the seventeen male Revelations of the César 2019 for his interpretation of Mathieu in Ludovic Bernard's Au bout des doigts. Welcome to the latest Jules Benchetrit!
