Lego - Lego launches #BuildToGive campaign to help two million children

By Mulder, 04 november 2022

"I love the idea that the LEGO Group is helping to turn family play into a time of giving for children around the world. I loved building my fireworks gift and can't wait to see the different designs that families share!" - Katy Perry.

The holidays are a special time for many families, but for others, it can be a more challenging time. This year, with Operation #BuildToGive, the Lego Group is encouraging families to express their creativity to build a Lego brick gift that will then be turned into a Lego gift for another child somewhere in the world. The #BuildToGive operation will thus contribute to passing on the pleasure of playing to those who need it most.

For the sixth consecutive year, the #BuildToGive campaign will encourage families around the world to create a gift using Lego bricks and share it on social media or on the Lego Life platform using the hashtag #BuildToGive.  For every creation shared before December 31, the Lego Group will donate a Lego product to a child with little or no access to play. The Lego company will enable two million children in hospitals, children's homes, or vulnerable populations around the world to play this holiday season. The process of participating is very simple and every donation counts, whether it is small or large, round or square, colored or monochrome. The LEGO Play Well study showed that play brings families together and makes them happier, so there couldn't be a better reason to bring families together and give them some moments of joy.

More than 4.5 million LEGO products have been donated as part of the #BuildToGive campaign since its launch in 2016, and this year the company is set to make its largest donation to date - 2 million gifts. 9 out of 10 parents worldwide believe that play can help children develop essential life skills, such as creativity, communication and self-confidence; qualities that can prove vital to their future success and well-being. #BuildToGive is just one of the many ways the LEGO Group seeks to help children around the world by giving them the opportunity to play and learn.

"For many families, the holidays are a time of celebration, where they can be together and enjoy playing. But for some, it can be a more complicated time," said Diana Ringe Krogh, vice president of social responsibility for the LEGO Group. "Hence the importance of the #BuildToGive campaign. Over the past five years, we have received a tremendous amount of feedback on this operation, and we want to thank the families who have participated each year. With their help, we've been able to give millions of LEGO gifts to children around the world, bringing them the joy and benefits of play."

The #BuildToGive operation is part of the LEGO Group's larger Build a Playful Holiday campaign, which encourages families to enjoy being together and having fun during the holidays. As part of the campaign, Katy Perry, the LEGO Group's muse this holiday season, will share a video featuring the gift she built herself for #BuildToGive on social media. The video will be shared on her various platforms in the coming weeks.

The #BuildToGive page on LEGO.com will be overflowing with making ideas as well as gift building tips to help families get as creative as possible. There is also information about LEGO stores around the world where these gifts can be built.
