Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz), her Navy veteran brother, Burton (Jack Reynor), and their dying mother live in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2032. As their mother's health deteriorates and medical bills mount, Flynne and Burton earn extra money by playing simulations ("Sims"). Burton is offered a chance to beta test a new Sim, and Flynne ends up playing, pretending to be his brother. The Sim takes place in London and tasks Flynne with breaking into a company known as the Research Institute to steal a valuable secret. When the mission goes wrong, Flynne begins to realize that the Sim is more real than she could have ever imagined. The London she explores exists in the future... the year 2099. And what Flynne discovered at the Research Institute has put her and her family in grave danger. There are people from the future who want to use Flynne for the information she stole... and there are others who want Flynne dead. Flynne meets Wilf (Gary Carr) in the London of the future, a man who could be the key to unlocking this mystery at hand. But first, in his present, Flynne and Burton, along with his former elite military unit, must rally to protect themselves from forces intent on killing them - forces sent from the future to retrieve Flynne's stolen vital secret.
With a compelling script that adapts one of William Gibson's best-selling novels, a prestigious cast featuring the sublime Chloë Grace Moretz, special effects worthy of today's blockbusters and a pilot directed by the gifted Vincenzo Natali (Cube (1997), Cypher (222), splice (2009) and numerous episodes of cult series such as Westworld), the new Primetime video series Peripherals, Flynne's Worlds (The Peripheral) is the must-see series of this late October. The presence of executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who previously worked on Westworld, is a considerable asset as they know perfectly well the tastes of the public and how to adapt in an original way cult novels of modern science fiction.
The numerous twists and turns of the first six episodes discovered before the broadcast (we can't wait for episodes 7 and 8) made us want to watch the episodes one after the other not only to see Chloë Grace Moretz on screen but also to escape from this gloomy period in which the worldwide pandemic of covid 19 and the war in the Ukraine followed one another. While cinemas are struggling to fill the scenes the public seems to have turned its attention to streaming platforms and are fond of series and movies not seen before. Certainly, the Peripheral series, The Worlds of Flynne (The Peripheral) fulfills its function of luxurious entertainment.
By putting the importance of virtual reality at the center of the story, The Peripheral series is definitely looking to the future and offers us a disturbing vision of London. We can easily recognize in this new series the touch of the creators of Westworld, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, especially by the presence of androids and a futuristic high-tech world in which cars can be invisible. The action which takes place in 2030 and 2090 lets us foresee a disturbing world
