Dwayne Johnson stars in Black Adam, an action-adventure film produced by New Line Cinema. The very first feature film dedicated to this superhero of the DC universe is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise).
Dwayne Johnson stars Aldis Hodge (City on a Hill (2019), One night in Miam (2020)i) as Hawkman, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)) as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi (Sex/Life (2021) Rush hour 3 (2007)) as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express (2017), The Mummy (2017)) as Ishmael, Quintessa Swindell (Voyagers (2021), Trinkets (2019)) as Cyclone, Bodhi Sabongui (A Million Little Things (2017)) as Amon, and Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia! and James Bond sagas) as Dr. Fate.
Jaume Collet-Serra directs from a script by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, and an original story by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, based on characters from the DC Universe. The character of Black Adam was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. The film is produced by Beau Flynn, Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter, Chris Pan, Eric McLeod, Geoff Johns and Scott Sheldon.
Filming began on April 10, 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia with Lawrence Sher as director of photography. Filming was delayed from the planned July 2020 start due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [On June 20, 2021, Dawyne Johnson reported that there were three weeks of shooting remaining, and on July 15, he announced that he had completed his scenes. Filming then continued without Dwayne Johnson for several weeks as production moved to Los Angeles, and ended on August 15, 2021.
Bill Westenhofer is the visual effects supervisor for the film, having done so for the DCEU film Wonder Woman (2017), while John Lee is the editor. In March 2022, Warner Bros. adjusted its release schedule due to the impacts of COVID-19 on the workload of visual effects providers. Black Adam was pushed back to October 21, 2022, while The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were moved from late 2022 to 2023 to allow time for visual effects to finish. Black Adam's delay is also said to be due to the fact that reshoots scheduled for February 2022 had to be postponed because most of Trilith's studios were busy with the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). Once that film was completed, reshoots for Black Adam began in early May, and were completed early the following month.
In April 2017, Johnson stated that he and DC intended to have Black Adam and Shazam appear together in a future film.Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in the DCEU, stated in April 2018 that Johnson's Black Adam was scheduled to face Superman in a future DCEU film after Black Adam and Shazam meet. Dany Garcia said in May 2021 that Johnson and the other producers planned to make several Black Adam films over the course of their long-term relationship with DC , and Hiram Garcia reiterated in July that there was potential for Cavill and Johnson to appear in a future project together as Superman and Black Adam. In November, Hiram Garcia clarified that they already had a plan for films and spin-offs featuring Black Adam and the JSA, which would depend on the success of the first film, and added that characters other than Shazam and Superman were being considered as potential future rivals to Black Adam, such as Wonder Woman.
Black Adam will be released in theaters and IMAX worldwide beginning October 19, 2022 and in North America on October 21, 2022. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
