The Batman is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. Produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is a reboot of the Batman film franchise. The film was directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. It stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman alongside Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. Set in his second year of fighting crime, the film sees Batman uncover corruption in Gotham City while pursuing the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer who targets Gotham's elite.

Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in 2013 for several films set in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). He signed on to direct, produce, co-write, and star in The Batman in 2015, but in 2017 he chose not to direct the film due to a combination of factors. Reeves took over as director and co-writer, reworking the story to emphasize Batman's detective side to a greater extent than previous Batman films. He took inspiration from comic books such as "Year One" (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), Ego (2000), and "Zero Year" (2013–14), and chose to feature a younger version of Batman. Affleck left The Batman entirely in January 2019 and the film's DCEU connections were removed. Pattinson was cast to replace him in May, with further casting confirmed in late 2019. Principal photography lasted from January 2020 to March 2021 in the United Kingdom and Chicago.

In addition to Robert Pattinson (Tenet, The lighthouse), the cast includes Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald), Paul Dano (Love & Mercy, 12 years a slave), Jeffrey Wright (No time to die, Westworld), John Turturro (The Transformers Saga, The Plot Against America), Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven, Interrogation) as Gotham City Attorney General Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson (Farewell amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál, Andy Serkis (Planet of the Apes, Black Panther) as Alfred and Colin Farrell (The Gentlemen, Fantastic Beasts).

Matt Reeves (The Planet of the Apes saga) directed the film on a script he co-wrote with Peter Craig, based on the DC Comics characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Dylan Clark (Planet of the Apes saga) and Reeves are producing the film, while Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo and Simon Emanuel are executive producing.  Reeves is joined by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser (Lion, Dune), cinematographer James Chinlund, with whom he previously collaborated on Planet of the Apes, cinematographers William Hoy (Planet of the Apes) and Tyler Nelson (Rememory), Oscar-winning cinematographer Jacqueline Durran (1917, Little Women, Anna Karenina), and composer Michael Giacchino (Spider-Man: Far from Home, Jurassic World, Star Wars Saga, Up).

The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022, delayed from an initial June 2021 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is intended to launch a Batman shared universe, with two sequels planned and two spin-off television series in development for HBO Max.

Synopsis
After roaming the streets as Batman and instilling fear in criminals, Bruce Wayne has explored Gotham City's most notorious neighborhoods. Aware that he can only rely on a few trusted allies - Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lieutenant James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) - among the city's corrupt notables, the lone vigilante has established himself as the only citizen capable of exacting vengeance. When a killer targets Gotham City's elite with sadistic crimes, a cluster of mysterious clues leads our masked investigator into the underworld where he crosses paths with Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin, (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton (Paul Dano). As he becomes convinced that the criminal may be in Gotham City and sees through him, Batman must forge new alliances, uncover the culprit, and restore justice to a city that has been plagued by abuse of power and corruption for too long. For two years, Batman, the vigilante who instills fear in the hearts of criminals, has been a symbol of vengeance in Gotham City. The lonely heir to the city's wealthiest family, he questions his family's fortune and roams the streets at night, using his mental abilities, physical strength and technological expertise to hunt down criminals and become the embodiment of the city's hope. Selina Kyle is a mysterious character who quietly infiltrates Gotham's seamiest underbelly to serve her own interests. She has the ferocity, agility and tenacity of a burglar, but behind her multiple identities and leather suits lies a fierce being who is more comfortable dealing with vagrants than with the city's inhabitants.
