Marvel-Comics - what role for Tom Hanks in a superhero movie?

By Mulder, 11 november 2021

If we no longer present the American actor with a prolific career, we can wonder why he has not yet appeared in the credits of a film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU in VO). And in a recent interview, Tom Hanks revealed the surprising reason behind this absence: "Here's the problem. First of all, they never called me once. Ever."

But he rounded out his remarks with the role he might be offered: "and I think one of these days they'll do it and they'll say 'is there any way you could consider playing the Secretary of Defense?'" Should we see his statement as a call to Kevin Feige or an indication that he has been contacted? After all, the position of US Secretary of Defense is vacant ...

Could Tom Hanks take over the role previously occupied in the MCU by William Hurt (Thaddeus E. Ross in The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Black Widow) or Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame)?

The future will tell us. Indeed, since the release of The Eternals last November 3 (read Mulder's review here), the next Marvel movie is expected in May with the second movie dedicated to Doctor Strange (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).

For the record, Marvel has reduced its releases from an average of four films per year to three:

- Doctor Strange 2 (in the Multiverse of Madness): May 6, 2022 in the United States,
- Thor 3 (Love and Thunder): July 8, 2022,
- Black Panther 2 (Wakanda Forever): November 11, 2022,
- The Marvels: February 17, 2023,
- Guardians of the Galaxy 3: May 5, 2023,
- Ant-Man and the Wasp 3 (Quantumania): July 28, 2023,
- Unknown Marvel movie: October 6, 2023,
- Unknown Marvel movie: November 3, 2023.
